Kaelen Dravari- The Half Breed-GURPS

I am constructing this world and campaign using extensive help from ChatGPT and other resources. Using the AI tools to help construct the setting, generate encounter areas and tables, and to quickly flesh out the setting in play.

Kaelen Dravar-by MidjourneyAI

Name:
Kaelen Dravari (Known among Fjallanders as “Kael Driftborn”)

Age:
24 years old, newly recognized as a grown man and fighter by the standards of both the Vaylan Empire and the frontier.

Species:
Human (Mixed heritage – Vaylan father, Kovari mother)

This mixed ancestry has earned him suspicion from both sides in his homeland, and made his position in society uncertain.

Class:
Warrior (Border Fighter / Skirmisher)

Trained in light arms, ambush tactics, and defensive fighting, suited to the brutal and shifting conditions of the borderlands.

Family Connections:
Father: Darius Varen – A former Vaylan legionnaire and minor official, disgraced for disobeying orders during a frontier campaign. He raised Kaelen to value honor over orders. Deceased.

Mother: Shevra of the Kovari – Once part of a nomadic clan, now living in exile after refusing to submit to a Vaylan marriage law. She taught Kaelen patience, awareness, and pride in one’s roots.

No siblings, but Kaelen had a foster-brother, Alric Thoradsson, a Fjallander boy whose family took in Kaelen briefly during his adolescence when he fled the empire.

Mentor: Old Captain Halros – A retired Vaylan soldier turned woodsman, taught Kaelen the sword and how to fight with honor on his own terms.

Appearance:
Lean, athletic build, built more for speed and endurance than brute strength.

Dusky olive skin and pale grey eyes, a rare combination marking his mixed heritage.

Dark brown hair, shoulder-length, usually tied back.

Simple, well-maintained armor, clearly pieced together from multiple cultures (Vaylan leather cuirass, Kovari shoulder wraps, a Fjallander-made knife).

Wears a faded red sash—once part of a Vaylan legion uniform—now used to bind his arm.

Broken Compass (Decision-Making Pattern):
“Hold the Line, Even When You Stand Alone.”

Kaelen was raised to believe duty is personal, not institutional.

He won’t abandon others, even if it means standing against allies or higher command.

While this makes him loyal and courageous, it can also lead him to take impossible stands, alienate others, or refuse help when he needs it.

Fears & Phobias:
Fear of Becoming the Enemy – He dreads losing his identity and becoming a weapon for someone else’s injustice.

Being Abandoned or Cast Out Again – His youth was full of displacement and mistrust.

Fire in Enclosed Spaces – He survived a warehouse fire as a child, trapped beneath fallen beams.

Mementos:
A broken Vaylan badge, worn smooth—once his father’s, stripped after his disgrace.

A small piece of knotted red-and-black thread, woven by his mother in the Kovari fashion, meant to “hold the spirit in place.”

A short bone whistle, given to him by Alric when they were boys, used to signal danger—or friendship—across distance.

Hobbies & Interests:
Reading and Copying Old Tales – He salvaged scraps of scrolls from ruins and loves retelling stories of flawed heroes and exiled kings.

Sparring & Training Drills – He practices constantly, driven by self-discipline, not ego.

Learning Languages – He speaks Vaylan, Kovari dialects, and some Fjallander, a rare skill on the frontier.

Woodscraft & Tracking – He learned these to survive in the wilds when he had no home.

Whittling & Knife Work – He carves small animal figures and gives them as gifts.

Personality Traits:
Quiet, Observant, and Principled – He speaks little, but when he does, it matters.

Honest and Dutiful, even if it brings him pain.

Calm in conflict, often sought out as a peacekeeper.

Gravely aware of the world’s cruelty, but chooses to do good anyway.

Slow to trust, but fiercely loyal once earned.

Flaw:
“He Carries the World on His Shoulders.”

Kaelen believes he alone must bear responsibility, even for things outside his control.

This leads to overwork, isolation, and exhaustion—he rarely asks for help.

He sometimes rejects authority even when it could aid him, if it reminds him of the empire’s corruption.

Others may see him as rigid or fatalistic, even though he means well.

Shard of Glass (Origin of Flaw):
The Burning of Hold Varek
At age fifteen, Kaelen’s mother had taken refuge in Hold Varek, a Kovari settlement within Vaylan jurisdiction. An orcish raid struck unexpectedly, and the local Vaylan commander refused to reinforce the hold, dismissing the Kovari as “expendable.”

Kaelen and his father defied orders, riding to help.

They held the palisade for hours, saving many—but when the smoke cleared, his father was dead, and the hold had been reduced to ash.

The empire branded them traitors, and Kaelen was cast out.

Ever since, Kaelen has refused to trust titles or uniforms, only the choices men make.
