Ep 20: Scene 54: Threshing 29
Chaos Factor: 3-Expected Scene

In addition to the general discomfort of sleeping on earth, I am too excited to stay in my bedroll for long. At the first cock’s crow, I am up lighting the fire for our morning meal, then packing my gear while Haggi and her girls are still rising, “Big day today!” I beam as I serve them their pottage.

Q: Does Alrick return with the wagon? Very Likely
As I finish getting things ready to load, I step outside and…Alrick isn’t here with the cart yet. “Wait here,” I tell the others as Warren and I set off to find him and our animals.

Q: Are my mules at the stables? Very Likely No Q: Did he return them last night? Unlikely No
Arriving at the stables, my mules are not there. “Did Alrick return my mules last night?” I ask Rofman.

“No, I didn’t see anyone bring your mules back, why?” the horser merchant asks.

Q: Did he return the cart? Very Unlikely No Q: Do I find Buck? Unlikely Exceptional No Q: Do I find Alrick? Very Unlikely No -Persuasion 19- Q: Is Arleck still in town? Likely No
I purse my lips, then head over to the cart yard and learn he did not return that either. I look for the laborers, Buck in particular. But neither he nor Alrick are anywhere to be found. “Do any of you know where I can find Arleck? He appears to have stolen two mules and a cart from me. I’ll give whichever one of you takes me to him five crowns, and he’ll probably live. If none of you help me, I can make no such promises.”

One of the men offers, “He left late yesterday on a cart pulled by two mules, shortly before nightfall. His wife and kids were with him.”

I nod, “Thank you.” I purse my lips, then head over to the horse yard.

-Persuasion 11/8-
“I need two mules,” I tell Roffman, “Thirty crowns, Norgard, for the pair, and you know these aren’t great animals.” I say selecting the only two that were passable among his remaining animals.

“Thirty two crowns,” Roffman insists. I hand him the amount, shaking my head, and taking the mules across to the carter where I purchase a second cart. I harness the animals to them, and have the cartwright inspect my work, then head back down towards Haggi’s home where I load up the wagon

-Encounter-dangerous pack of dogs!- -Animal Handling 19- Q: Are there witnesses? Likely No
Along the way, a group of mangy dogs rush towards the mules, but I manage to keep control of the team. Realizing the street is nearly deserted, I flick a bolt of flame at one, incinerating the animal

Q: Do the others bolt and run? Very Likely No Animal Handling 7, 5 18
And the mules panic, racing down the street, with me holding tight while Warren follows in our wake. I hear one of the dogs squeal as a cart wheel crushes its leg. It takes me nearly a minute to get the animals under control with the dogs snarling and barking at them. Warren keeps pace behind us, until he isn’t. I look back, and Warren is still on the ground as three of the dogs surround him… I leap from the cart and race towards the animals, yelling, “Get off of him!”

Q: Do they turn towards me? Very Likely Yes Medicine 10
The animals race towards me, I plant my feet, with rage in my eyes, and incinerate the three as they draw close. Then I run towards my fallen ally. Warren is badly torn. I quickly begin bandaging his wounds using Sunberry on the bandages for good measure, “Hold on you brave, stupid dog! Why didn’t you jump into the cart!”

Q: Did people come out from the noise? Likely Yes
“What happened,” several quarry workers come outside from their homes to the sight of burning animals in the street, and me cradling my dog.

-Intimidate 10- Q: Does anyone call for the watch? Likely No
“Fucking pack of strays attacked my dog and I, my mules and cart!” I curse as I pick up Warren. “And I burned them like I’ll burn anyone who dares raise a hand against me and mine. The bystanders slowly back away and return to their homes, and I set Warren down inside Haggi’s cottage, on his bed, and begin loading the cart.

“What happened?” Haggi asks, staring at the animal and seeing my tear stained face.

“That bastard Arleck stole my cart and mules, then feral dogs attacked Warren and I. I’m done with this town!” I fume as we finish loading.

Q: Is Defris home? 50/50
On our way out, I stop at Dorak’s. I ask if Defris is home, but he is not, so I dismiss my hope for revenge on the thief, and continue on my way.

Q: Is Roslan home? Unlikely No Q: Do I spot her in the fields? Likely No
In the village, I stop at Roslan’s house one last time, but she is not there, nor do I spot her in the fields, so I head towards Stonebridge.

-Morning Encounter-Tradesman-(Generate Hellerman, the wandering physician) Q: Did he see them? 50/50 No
We soon meet a well dressed man travelling the roads alone with a mule behind him. “Greetings friend! Did you happen to see a man in his mid fifties, perhaps with a wife and children on a cart drawn by two mules this morning? Or perhaps last night if you were on the road then?”

“No, I cannot say that I have. Friends of yours?” he asks.

I shake my head, “No. Nobody who steals my mules and cart is a friend to anyone.” I snap the reins and continue my journey.

“Let it go,” Haggi urges. “If you find them? What then?”

“Depends. If he begs mercy, we’ll trade mules. I won’t leave his wife and children stranded.” I reply

“And if not?” Haggi asks.

“He’s a horse thief,” I reply, coldly, then glance back at Warren, who would not have been injured had we not had to go looking for our cart in the morning.

-Immersion-feel something silky, npc-
Ep 20: Scene 54: 29th-Stone Bridge-Interrupt-Refugees-Unexpected Fast
Chaos Factor: 4

Dora is leaning up against me, dozing. Her silky hair against my arm while Haggi sits on the other side of her. Lisa sits in the back of the cart, gently petting Warren, whose breathing is raspy. Princeling nuzzles against his canine companion. It is strange how close they are, cat and dog. The village of Stonebridge comes into view and I stop briefly to speak with the watchmen.

“Ilsa! Is that really you!” I hear Lucilla cry out, with a bucket in hand, spotting me at the gate.

“Lucilla! Thank the goddess you are here! I came to keep my promise to you. To teach you. To take you as my apprentice,” I grin.

Q: Does she still want to be my apprentice? Nearly Certain Yes
She sets the bucket down and races towards me, and I step down from the wagon and wrap her in a warm hug as she reaches me. “There you are! These are my friends, Haggi, and her daughters Lisa and Dora.”

“Where’s Eveline?” Lucilla asks.

“In Farhold. That is where we are going. We are heading to Westhold where some well armed men will escort us the rest of the way home,” I explain. “Now, I need to speak to these guards, and then I want to talk to your mother.”

“Alright, I’ll go tell her you are here. We are staying with Mosay, do you remember where he lives?” she asks.

I nod, “Yes, I remember.”

I then approach the guards, “Did someone arrive from Oldenstone last night in a cart, drawn by two mules. He is in his fifties and may have had a wife and children with him. Did he pass through your gates, and if you do not know, may I speak to the men who were on watch last night?”

Q: Do they know? Unlikely No Q: Do they fetch last night’s guard? Likely No
“We didn’t see anyone, and if you want to talk to Greber who was on shift last night, go to the manor house yourself.

I nod, “Thank you,” then I lead our cart to the manor house and knock on the door. A servant opens, “I would like to speak with Grebor. I understand he was on the east gate last night and might have seen a horse thief I’m seeking pass through,” I tell the man.

Q: Will he fetch Grebor? Likely No Q: Does he reopen the door? Unlikely No
He looks me up and down, “Like you own a horse!” and slams the door in my face. I bang on it again.

After a few minutes, I give up and drive our cart to Mosay’s place, where Rhena, Sena and Nelly and Lucilla, and Roget all wait outside to see me. “She’s the one that always had food but doesn’t talk,” Roget observes.

“Oh, she talks,” Lucilla beams as Rhena approaches me.

Q: Does Haggi speak up? 50/50 No
“Is it true that you are a healer? You gave us food on the road, food to help us in Oldenstone, coin enough to sustain, and a fine mule for my daughter’s dowry, and why?” Rhena asks.

-Persuasion 22-
“Because I could help you, and you needed help. Lucilla asked to teach her healing. And I told her I would. I am here to keep that pledge. Will you let her come with me to Farhold or wherever the winds might carry us? So I can teach her?” I ask.

“Y…yes,” Rhena stammers, “A fine trade. Taught by a good woman. How can we ever thank you, Isla…Lovechild.”

“It’s Lady Yseldra Faust, daughter of Baron Faust of Farhold. Trusting me with Lucilla is more than enough thanks, for she will be a great student. She has a kind heart and a sharp mind. She will learn quickly and well,” I smile.

Q: Do they fall to their knees? Very Likely Exceptional No
“Lady? Daughter of a baron?” Sena scoffs. “I find that hard to believe.”

“Suit yourself,” I shrug. “The offer is as offered. An apprenticeship for your daughter, regardless of what name you call me.”

Q: Does Rhena still agree? 50/50 Exceptional No
“No! She can’t go with you. Whoever you are,” Rhena states firmly.

I tip my head and shrug, “that is your right to say.” Then I look to Lucilla.

Q: Does Lucilla still want to come? Likely No
She is starting to whimper, looking between her mother and I then shaking her head, “No. I cannot go with you.”

I nod, “I understand. Be safe, remain wise. Obey your mother, she is a good woman.” I smile, then climb back onto my cart. “My pledge is fulfilled. Take good care of Hare for me. That is my brand on his flank. One of only two animals to bear it.” I snap the reins and we continue on our way.

-Immersion-smell of metal-
Ep 20: Scene 55:
Chaos Factor: 4-Expected Scene

We continue onwards towards Mudflat, but shortly after leaving Stonebridge, I stop the cart to check on Warren. The metallic tang blood hangs in the air, and I comfort the poor animal. “You drive for a bit, Haggi, I am going to sit here with Warren for a bit. It has been a long day already. Just follow the road. We’ll be in Mudflat soon enough. Let me talk to the guards…they are mostly scum, like the lord of the village’s heirs. His sons reek of the Dark Brother, but the father is too pious to see it in his own kin.”

-Encounter-Laborers- Q: Do they insist on interacting? Unlikely Yes Q: Do they need a wagon? Likely Yes
We pass by a number of laborers working in the fields, and some wave us down. “Hay there friends, do you have space in your cart for a few more? We are heading back to Mudflat.”

Haggi looks at me and I nod, “Climb aboard, careful of my dog though, he’s hurt.”

“Ugh! What happened?” one of the men asks.

“Pack of feral dogs in Oldenstone. He never had a chance,” I lament.

“He’s a fighter! Who bandaged him?” the man asks.

“I did. He’s my dog. Been with me awhile. Not going to leave him to die in the street,” I reply, sadly.

“Where are you heading?” he asks, noticing our cargo.

“Farhold hold, through Westhold,” I explain.

“Well, you can’t cross the Lonefields at night. Hey, you ladies, don’t stay at the inn. Stay with my family and I tonight, lest… Well if the guards cause you any trouble, tell them you are my cousins, staying with me. They should leave you alone. Mostly.”

“What’s your name, friend?” I ask the man.

“Edor,” he replies.

I nod, “I’ve been through Mudflats before. Your help would have been most welcome then,” I smile weakly.

Reaching the gates, there are two different guards than the ones that Eveline had to distract to leave Sena and Nelly alone last time, and Edor seems to breath a sigh of relief. “Stop the wagon,” I tell Haggi, and I lean out over the side, “Did a man in his fifties, with two mules and a cart like this one pass through last night, perhaps with a wife and children, maybe waiting for a caravan to join to cross tomorrow?”

Q: Did the guards see him? 50/50 Yes, Q: Is he still here? Likely Yes
“Check the inn,” the soldier replies, and I nod my thanks, and we head on to Edor’s place where Haggi and the girls settle in. We put the mules and cart in the man’s barn with his yoke oxen. Then I walk over to the inn in spite of Edor’s objections.

Q: Is the stableboy there? Likely Yes Q: Are Swifthoof and Tanny in the stable? Nearly Certain Yes
As I approach, I stop, take a deep breath, and head over to the stables instead, and push open the doors, looking for my stolen mules. “Ah! There you are!” I smile on seeing them.

The stable hand approaches, “Those aren’t your mules.”

Q: Is a Westbound caravan here? 50/50 Yes
“Yes, they are. They were stolen from me last night. I suppose they were brought in…earlier today? Waiting for a caravan to go west, I’d guess, like the one whose oxen are here, and wagons are parked outside? I’m guessing they arrived maybe an hour ago? Crossing the Lone Fields tomorrow?”

Q: Am I correct? Very Likely Yes
“Ummm…yes,” the stable hand admits.

-Intimidate 21-
“Now, may I take the mules that belong to me? Or do you wish me to speak with Lord Lewis? Or perhaps, you would like to go fetch the man who claims these are his animals?” I offer.

(Roll a d6, he lets me take the animals)
“Um…I guess, if they are yours,” he stammers. I nod, and lead the two mules out and back over to Edor’s stable. Then having secured them, I walk over to the manor house, and knock on the door.

Q: Can I get an audience with Lord Lewis? 50/50 Exceptional Yes
Banging on the door, a servant answers, “Please inform Lord Lewis that Lady Yseldra Faust of Farhold wishes a word with him. Please remind him that we met lest year when my brother and I were on our way to Baron Pond’s wedding, and that he perhaps has a letter in his possession from my mother meant to be delivered to me should I show up at his doorstep, as I am…right now,” I inform the servant.

He looks me up and down, then opens the door and leads me to his master’s hall.

Q: Is it just Lord Lewis? 50/50 Exceptiona No
Entering the hall, I find Lord Lewis and his household present, eating dinner, servants at the ready. “What is this?” Lord Lewis looks up at his servant in surprise.

“Lady Yseldra Faust?” the servant stammers.

Q: Do they understand who I am? Nearly Certain Yes Q: Do they bow? Very Likely Yes
“lord Lewis, I pray you are in good health. Lady Corina, lovely as always, your additions to Lady Elsbeth’s wedding feasts last year were truly delightful. Sir Alric,” I nod at the son who I despise, “Your victory over Sir Karig at her ladyship’s anniversary celebration was well earned I am told”and Vethar? Has Lord Pond knighted you and made you his errant yet, or are you still a squire? Squire Piros,” I nod to the youngest. Good Lord, I trust my mother sent you a letter some month and a half ago, similiar to this one. With a letter addressed to me within?”

Lord Lewis and Lady Corina rise as soon as they realize I am who I say that I am, then they bow…their children follow suit, “Your ladyship, please…join us. To what do we owe your visit?”

-Deception 18 about my purpose, Persuasion 18 about the horse thief issue,
I smile and graciously take the seat at Lord Lewis’s right hand as his heir is forced to move down to the end of the table. His visible resentment gives me great pleasure. “Lord Lewis. I am on my way back home. I have spent the last month and a half living as a commoner in order to get a better sense of their…shall we say…disposition? And having learned what I needed, I am on my way to Westhold where I will join a company of my father’s men and return home. Unfortunately, as I was still travelling incognito, a man in Oldenstone stole a pair of mules and a cart from me. He is here in this very town. Now, I have already reclaimed my animals without his knowledge, but should the horse thief dare accuse my maid servant and I of theft in the morning, do be so kind as to give justice to the thief who accuses the rightful owner of theft. But do not harm his wife or children!” I glare at Sir Alric and his younger brothers.

Lord Lewis chuckles, “What an intriguing excursion that must have been. Of course, if you are falsely accused, we’ll not harm the innocent wife or children, but should we not simply arrest the man now?”

“Bah! You know my father has a soft spot for petty criminals,” I glance at Vethar as I say this, “as long as they don’t hinder our house’s affairs. He’ll be stuck here, and perhaps ask to become one of your tenants, as…without my mules, my cart will do him no good! He is good with a wagon, after all. I just wouldn’t leave him unguarded again.”

-Topic-History-
I then accept their hospitality for the night, and while the boys retire to the inn, as is their custom, I spend the evening in the company of Lord Lewis and Lady Corina. We talk about the recent chaos in Feldholm, one of the first areas to be resettled by civilized men here in the west, and the ill tidings of a goblin conquest of the kingdom. Then I tell them about having found two books detailing the Elven Kingdom of Elhana Sur, and the Human Empire of Thurm which together detail most of the geography of our lands some 3000 years ago. After speaking for several long hours, they retire to bed and I enjoy the hospitality of their guest room, sleeping in absolute comfort for the first time in weeks.

Ep 20: Scene 56: Threshing 30th
Chaos Factor: 5 Expected Scene

-Warren passes con check, I fail medicine check, so lingering injury-He is severly injured for 10 days (until Vinetread 3rd) and is horribly scarred, permanently (disad on charisma persuasion, advantage on intimidation)
I bolt upright in the comfortable bed, suddenly remembering who I am…truly! I quickly dress, and rush out of the manor house and over to Edor’s hovel where I burst through the door, wrap my arms around Warren, weeping at first, then changing his bandages, tending his wounds, “Please forgive me for leaving you here alone overnight,” I whisper to the disbelief of Edor and his family.

I smell the smoke of the hearth as the morning pottage is prepared, and I eat alongside the others. Then Haggi and I go to the barn, and I hitch up Fleethoof and Tanny to the cart, then leash the other two animals behind. “Thank you for your hospitality,” I nod to Edor. “You are a kind man.”

“Think nothing of it. But…where were you last night?” he asks, “I feared you stayed in the Inn?” he stares at the two additional animals, “Did you steal them?”

-Persuasion 19-
“I recovered what was stolen from me, then informed an old friend I was in town, so that he might see that justice is done,” I explain without explaining, but he does not press further.

I lead our cart to the edge of town where a caravan is forming to cross the Lonefields

Q: Does Arleck come accusing me of theft? Likely No
I see Arleck racing down to join us, heading towards my cart. I look back and lock eyes with him. He falters, face turning ashen. Then he turns around and walks back towards the inn. I shake my head, and let my cart fall in behind the column of traders heading towards Westhold with loads of stone, likely to rebuild fortifications damaged in the recent war. With a cart of our own, I see no need to introduce us, as there is safety in numbers and we are clearly commoners moving back home after having fled.

-No Encounters, some flooded areas-
The road through the Lonefields is as quiet and desolate as the last time we crossed here. We have to cross a small stream that had overflowed its banks, and my cart gets stuck briefly, but I quickly harness the two extra mules to the front of the wagon, and four animals together easily pull the small cart free, then I return the extra animals to their trailing position in back. “Well, I suppose they are good for something then,” I mutter.

“What do you mean? Those are perfectly good animals,” Haggi asks.

I chuckle, “I suppose that’s true,” glancing back and shaking my head at how the two animals crowd into each other, or brush up against any tree or brush we pass, and how one’s gait is simply painful to watch and would be excruciating to ride, but as a cart mule, he is perfectly fine. “Perfectly serviceable, better than many I’ve seen.

Q: Do we get lodging? Likely Yes
I soon join her inside, carrying my pets up to our room, then after settling Warren onto my bed, I go downstairs where Haggi and her daughters enjoy a warm, well prepared meal after a long day on the road. We listen to a man playing flute while caravaners discuss the journey and worries about orcs, whether they are truly gone or if raiders may plague the roads ahead.

Q: Does anyone approach us? 50/50 Yes (the caravanner)
THe caravan master comes over to our table, his fine clothes, covered in quarry dust, and his motions smooth as a cat, “Missus,” he nods, “Two women, two girls, a cart and four mules, travelling west? What’s your story? My men said you got out of that stream pretty easily. Some of my ox wagons had trouble.”

“Your wagons are loaded with stone, our cart is a bit lighter,” I smile. “Talia Evenbough,” I offer my hand. Haggi raises an eyebrow.

“My men call me Master Zebel,” he replies, “but you haven’t told me…why?”

“A better life. We are destined for Farhold. Ever been there?” I ask.

Q: Is he helping with the tower? Likely Yes Q: Do the girl’s eyes go wide? Likely No
“As matter of fact, I have. I’ve been hauling stone down to build some new tower for the baron there. I hear it’s for his daughter. Some sort of powerful, demon slaying witch or something. You know those witches like their towers and all. so the stories go,” he waxes.

Q: Does Haggi shoot me a questioning glance? Likely Exceptional Yes
The girls, thankfully, don’t seem to be listening, but Haggi shoots me a questioning glance. I smile at Zebel, “I trust it is a sturdy tower. How many floors will it have?”

“Oh, it’s a short thing, only four. Not much taller than most of the other towers along the outer wall,” he shrugs.

Q: Outer tower? Very Likely Yes
“So is it on the outer wall?” I ask.

“Yes, south wall…they don’t really need one there, but something about a good view across the fields or something. Taller than it strictly needs to be, I supposed,” he shrugs.

I grin, “Well, four stories? I suppose that leaves room for a bed chamber, a study a kitchen, and larder, plus servants quarters on their own floor?”

He shrugs, “I suppose so, the chimney vents to serve an hearth on each floor, and there is a cellar as well. I nice setup if she is supposed to live there.”

“I know I would certainly be pleased if I were here!” I laugh.

“So why are you bound for Farhold?” he asks.

“I am an herbalist, perhaps setting up my own shop there. Is this load you are carrying bound for Farhold as well?” I press.

Q: Is it? Very Likely Yes
“As a matter of fact, it is. So, perhaps you should stay with use along the road?” he offers.

“That would be good, and well…I will be meeting some friends in Westhold, so our caravan will grow a bit more, if you don’t mind a brief stop near Goodwill along the way,” I suggest.

He shrugs, “That is the old path. Nowadays, we go Short trot, Long Trot, Hamstrung then the road south.”

“Well, let’s discuss this further tomorrow night in Westhold,” I offer. Then we continue eating and enjoying music until the children grow tired, then Haggi and I take them up to her room, and I retire to mine.

Ep 20: Scene 59: Threshing 31st
Chaos Factor: 5-Expected Scene

Sitting in the dining hall of th Even Hand Inn while Haggi, her children and I eat or morning porridge, I listen to the torrent of rain pouring down outside. “Roads will be a mess today. Maybe even tomorrow if this keeps up,” I warn her. Haggi nods quiet agreement.

Looking across the room, I notice what appears to be a silver plate hanging from the wall behind the barroom counter . Embossed upon it, in gold with silver accents, is woman, naked, suckling a child at her breast, with great wings sprouting behind her. I get up to take a closer look and though I cannot see what is engraved around the edges, it appears to be ancient Thurmian script with a small bloodstone between each character. “Malvern?” I ask the orange eyed inkeeper, “What do you want for that plate? And how did you come to possess it?”

Q: Is he willing to sell it? Very Unlikely Exceptional No Q: Did he recover it himself? Unlikely Yes
“It isn’t for sale,” he says with a strong finality in his voice. “Now, as for how I came to possess it, that is a five crown tale if there ever was one!” I winks with a mischievous grin.

“A five crown tale? What is it about then? A tale of lost riches in ancient ruins?” I ask.

He smirks, “Without a crown, the story does not even begin.”

I sigh, then looking back to where Haggi and her children sit, and at the nearby caravaners and drovers, the lutist already playing quietly, I grin, “Alright then…a five crown tale for a roomful of ears.” I walk over near where the lutist plays, the best place to a tale to be told, and I set five crowns down, one at a time, then sit beside them so I can hear most clearly.

Q: Are all eyes on him? Very Likely No (Generate region)(Generate Ruin Type)(Generate inhabitants)(generate a fiend)
Most people pay him no mind and Malvern walks over, and picks up the first coin, examining it, then with a smile, he sets in his purse. He nods to the lute player, and the tune changes as Malvern begins the tale of the boldness of his youth, “When I was your age, I earned my living with my blade. Not in the traditional sense of hiring myself out as a caravan guard, or soldier, but as a…seeker of fortune. For I had heard from youth about the ancient ruins that dot the lands and what horrors and treasures they contain.” He slides down a second coin, and I frown, for he has given me nothing of value yet. “So I had followed a caravan north to Cragfall, where the lake is full of salt, and the swamps inhabited by lizard looking men, and goblins infest the nearby woods, and in the morning, far from the city, across the lake, on a good day one can sometimes see through the mist, an island far in the distance.” He slides down a third coin, but this time, I hold my tongue. “So with three companions, I miss them all, I borrowed a boat and sailed to this island, and on arriving we were surprised to see two crude looking boats already on the shore, but far larger than our simple craft. Undeterred, we crept ashore and began to explore, coming across an ancient stone house, laying partial ruins, near the center of the isle amidst a maze of apple trees, growing wild and untamed.” He slides off the fourth coin, “My companions and I slipped inside, and so writing on the walls in strange script, ancient statues, and even discovered an old shrine, where I found this plate, cups bowls and candlesticks of similar design, somehow untarnished by wind, salt, rain and years, but as we took these relics of a bygone era, from the shadows came great clouds of darkness that flit between use, enveloping us, and cutting us as they passed by. I swung my sword, and fight as we could, our foes could not be seen for they were cloaked in shadow. But I struck one down, and saw…a hellish looking bat with eyes like fire. We fled in terror as the fiends pursued us…I lost my Elfrin, for he could not keep pace, but in spite of his screams, we dare not turn back to enter the cloud of darkness enveloping him. We raced to our boat, where three great ogres lie in wait. Thul did not even see the blow that caved in his skull. Camric and I leapt into our boat, only to discover its bottom had been smashed out. He ran for one of the ogre’s boats, while I leapt into the water and began to swim, abandoning my sword. I heard Camric screaming as his arms were pulled from their sockets, and I fought hard not to drown in the briny depths that threatened to pull me under. I tore off my pack, and emptied my satchel, then swam for the shore, which I could not reach.” He takes the final coin, “I woke on the shore a day or two later, rescued by salt panners, my skin burned, and taut, my eyes forever changed, but I was alive. As it turns out, one cannot drown in that lake, not unless overburdened. One simply, floats, and like a piece of driftwood, I slowly made it to shore. My companions dead, my weapons lost, with nothing to my name, or so I thought, I…was blessed by Freia to find that I had not fully emptied my satchel, this plate, and three others like it, had not fallen out. And I sold the others to rebuild my life, but this one, I keep, to remind me of the folly of my youth, and my companions who did not live to see their full lot of days.”

I nod, quietly enraptured by his tale. Then, once the spell was broken, I agree, “That was, truly, a five crown tale.”

Q: Did the children listen? Likely Yes
The older child, Lisa, sits with her jaw hanging open. The younger, Dora, hid her face in her mother’s embrace on hearing of the bats and ogres. I smile at the girl, rubbing her head, “It’s alright. Was a long time ago and very far away.”

Then I follow Malvern back to the bar and have my tankard filled once more, “Any other tales of that sort.”

“How many crowns do you have?” he winks.

I laugh, “Perhaps another time then.”

We wait a bit longer, and finally the storm lets up shortly after lunch.

Q: Does Zebel continue today? 50/50 Exceptional No
Zebel goes out side for a bit, then returns to the inn, “Alright lads, we wait until tomorrow, perhaps it will be dry enough to travel tomorrow.”

I shrug, and start to pull out Warren’s ball, but then I remember, he lies sleeping upstairs, unable to play. I return to him with food and water while Princeling wanders the village doing whatever Princeling does…hopefully not stealing anymore fish!

Q: Does anyone approach me? Unlikely Exceptional No
That night, after dinner, I clean Warren’s wounds and replace his bandages, ensuring he has eaten well enough to hasten his recovery. Then, I lay down to bed.

As I move Warren down to the cart, I hear Dora giggling as Lisa tickles her younger sister. The mules are harnessed and Princeling already sits on his favorite sack of grain. Haggi is on the driver’s bench and the caravan is forming up to lead us out. The sky is clear there is a cool, gentle breeze, and our bellies are full from the morning’s pottage. We even have a couple of fresh loaves for the road. As Zebel’s company starts to move, I snap the reins and Swifthoof and Tanny start trudging forward. The malingers behind following the cart as well.

-No Morning Encounter- Q: Does anyone approach us in the village? Unlikely No
At the village of Sawdust, we stop at the Red Leaf Inn for lunch, enjoying fresh cooked pork pies with some sliced apples, bread and cheese. The girls seem excited as apparently, they have not been getting much meat these last few years but now, it is every day! I check Warren’s bandages while the rest of the company prepares to move once more.

-Afternoon-No Encounter- Q: Do the town guards hald us? Very Unlikely No Q: Does his caravan get loding? Very Likely Yes
We follow the caravan into Westhold, and up to the Iron Wheel Inn. Haggi is about to jump down to go arrange our lodging, but I tell her to simply wait. I then go inside with Zebel, and watch as he arranges rooms for his people, “So I have friends with a place for me to stay the night, but we can meet you here in the morning?”

He nods, “Very well, but know we leave at the crack of dawn, Hamstrung is a hard push.”

I nod, “Yes, it would be. If I miss you, perhaps we will cross paths in Farhold. Safe travels friend!”

“Safe travels to you as well,” he nods, then I head outside, and guide our wagon up to Lord Alestor’s keep.

-Encounter-Generate Brother Simons
“Hold there, good women. Surely you do not mean to enter our most noble lord’s den of iniquity?” a white robed priest leading a group of worshippers accosts me as we leave the market and start up the path to Alestor’s gardens and home. Looking beyond him, I see the lord’s men watching the assembly.

“Well, yes. We have business with Lord Alestor,” I admit.

He looks me up and down, Lisa as well, then noting the contents of our wagon, “Young refugees are unwise to seek our lord’s help, for he has none to give! Unless you are whores, you’ll find no welcome in his court. Are you whores?”

Q: Does Haggi speak? Unlikely No Intimidation 13 Q: Are the guards approaching? Unlikely No
“Your words would cost you your tongue in any other hold,” I warn the priest, “Freia’s protection is great, but cannot save a priest from his own treacherous tongue and a lord’s gallows. Let us forget this conversation, step aside, and let me pass.” I glance back up towards the guards. Fortunate for the priest and his friends, they are as idle as their master.

“Pah! This lord is unlike any other, and is unworthy of his title,” the priest persists, gesturing towards the men by the gate, “Orcs could pour through the city and they’d to nothing as long as none cross the gate or hold back wine and meat for the Baron’s feasts! The only reason the city the barony stands is because there are good men among his vassals, brave men among tenants, and neighboring lord who honor their alliances with a useless man!”

I look back up to the gate, “Are any of these neighboring lords within?”

Q: Does he know? Very Likely No
“Which of them could stomach such a place?” the priest asks. I climb down from the wagon and push my way past his people, approaching the guards.

The sergeant of the watch approaches as I draw near, “Hold woman. What is your business with your lord?”

I stop and regard him for a moment. He’s a tall man, about twice my age. His voice is clear as a bell. “I am seeking some soldiers from Farhold. Are they inside your lord’s keep? Or at one of the inns in town?” I ask.

Q: Are they inside? Very Likely Yes
“They are inside,” he snorts, “Why do..”

“Who leads them?” I demand. “I want the name of the company’s captain.”

Q: Is Sonder leading them? Very Likely Exceptional Yes Q: Does the sergeant tell me? Likely Yes (Sgt Zertran’s Insight 6)
“A Captain Sonder, I believe,” the sergeant replies.

-Persuasion 24-
I grin excitedly, “Please tell Sergeant Sonder that his black queen has arrived.”

The sergeant looks at me in confusion, then returns to this station and sends a runner into the keep.

Q: Is Eveline with him? Likely No
A few minutes later, Sergeant Sonder with four of his men emerge from the gate. The men stop just outside as he continues towards me, “The red fox escaped but lost her tail, this way and that destroying her trail, but the hound did not seek to bite or to nip, but embrace her once more in loving grip.” Stopping five feet before me, he drops to his knees and bows his head. His men do the same from the gate.

“Rise, my friend,” I command, and he stands. Then I throw my arms around him, “I have missed you so, Captain Sonder.” He tentatively pats me back and then embraces me true. I step back, and we each have tears in our eyes. Catching my breath, I explain, “Tomorrow, we return home by way of Goodwill, though I hear that road is in ruins. I have to recover things I surrendered…my tail, as it were, then we return home.” I look back towards Haggi and my wagon, “The priest blocks us. Be gentle, for their grievance is true.” I then signal the men to follow as Sonder and I head back to the cart.

“Is that your father, the baron?” blurts out Lisa as we draw close.

Q: Do the protestors back away? Likely Yes
The priest and his people step away as Faust livery approach, and I climb back onto the wagon as one of the men helps guide the mules inside the walls of the keep. I smile at Lisa, “No, but he is one of my dearest friends.”

Ep 20: Scene 61: Alestor’s Halls, (32nd)
Chaos Factor: 4 Expected Scene

I introduce Haggi and her children to Captain Sonder, and he explains that he has twenty men with, quartered in one of the barracks, and that two guest rooms are prepared for my entourage and I, along with proper dress for Lord Alestor’s court. As he guides Haggi, her children and I towards our room, I can hear the continuous festivities taking place, as the squeals of delight and sounds of music carry well throughout the lord’s palace.

I shake my head at the extravagance of the tapestries and statuary throughout the hall, most of it depicting men and women in various states of passion and undress. A fortune in undulgence celebrating…indulgence. I am grateful to arrive at the guest room the Baron had prepared for me. A fine dress awaits me on the bed, and the overly large window, easily walked through, opens on to a balcony that overlooks a luxurious garden, with a pool of crystal clear water. It is such a strange place.

“I will send a servant to draw you a bath. As for this, Haggi? Shall I send food to her quarters?” Sonder asks.

“Yes, and have my dog Warren brought here to me. Gently. He has saved my life, more than once, and is in grave need of rest. Have food and water brought for him, here please,” I command.

Then I walk over and study my appearance in the full length mirror, the first I have seen since leaving home it seems.

A short time later, a servant arrives, “I am here to guide you to your bath.” she bows, and in confusion, I follow her and am led to a small, private bath similar to the public bath houses in major towns.

Q: Am I alone? Unlikely Exceptional Yes (Generate the servant)
Thankfully, I am the only one there besides the servants, for I am certain that there can only be one such room in this palace. I undress, and enjoy soaking my sore muscles in the warm water while a servant scrubs my back and another washes my hair. “You have arrived to enjoy our lord’s gracious hospitality?” one of the servants asks me.

I glance at her, “I am always grateful for a warm bed and a full belly, but I am merely passing through.”

“But you will join him at his feast tonight, yes?” she presses.

-Her insight 3- Q:Does she realize I am noble? Very Unlikely given the hair Yes
“Of course. It is an impudent guest who declines what is offered,” I shrug.

-My insight 14 vs her deception 7-
“Well, I pray you enjoy his hospitality,” she smiles insincerely.

“Thank you, good woman,” I reply, then rise and dry myself off, before dressing for the evening’s dinner. I look down upon my dress in concern, for it seems the sort of thing Eveline or Mini might wear, a little less than I prefer. Undoubtedly a gift from my host.

Ep 20: Scene 62: Alestor’s Feast-Interrupt Lady Alfifa decieve/important
Chaos Factor: 4

I enter the great hall and am astonished to see a pair of horses dancing to music. The hall has a high, vaulted ceiling and great, colorful glass windows above. A breathtaking sight that I had nearly forgotten from my previous visit. There are musicians playing an array of instruments, acrobats and even a fire eater. A veritable circus, performing for one man’s dinner. Or rather, one man and his court.

Lord Alestor sits at the head of his table, a corpulant old man whose plate is already full of sliced ham from the hog set on the great table. His current lover, or at least one of them, leans against him, her blonde locks covering more of her cleavage than her dress does. She regards me with curiousity as I enter the room. She is not much older than me. She signals that I am to be seated at the baron’s left side, and servants quickly bring me a cup and plate. Sonder sits at the lowest end of the table. The baron’s stewards, errants and other guests are placed along its length according to rank as is custom.

A noblewoman near my age (Lady Alfira) seated near Captain Sonder greets me, “Are you the wayward child? A spoiled girl wandering the lands while our holds are burned and your father is left too preoccupied with you to honor his alliances?”

“A liege defends his vassals. He is not bound to defend those of his neighbors,” I reply, instantly regretting my words.

Q: Is Alestor paying any attention to my words? Unlikely Yes Q: Is Vanessa jealous? Likely No
“Your father made an oath, yet he did not send men when my lands were raided three weeks ago. Is that because you were lost?” he asks, but his eyes drop as he speaks, and his lecherous smile proves the dress was his decision. His woman peeks past him, and smirks.

-Intimidate 6-
“When orcs came against you midsummer, my brother led a hundred men to repel them, cutting them off from behind and becoming the anvil against which…Lord Pond’s forces crushed your invaders,” I reply. “I understand your men fought alongside Oldenstone’s to defend your holds.”

I notice Captain Sonder shaking his head at me to stop, but Alestor replies, “Are you saying my lands were only saved by my allies?”

-Performance 14-
“What I am saying is…this wine is exquisite,” I lean forward and tilt my body towards him a bit as I raise my cup, allowing him a better view as I imagine Eveline might.

Q: Is he distracted enough to drop the subject? Likely Exceptional No
“Do not imagine you can flirt your way out of this. I’ve prettier than you any time I’d like,” I licks his lips, pulling his mistress tight for a moment. “Do you impugn my honor?”

-Persuasion 23-
I lean back in my chair, and sigh, “My father’s forces were still recovering from our losses under Lord Mical’s leadership. It was his first taste of battle and his losses were higher than expected. Coupled with the losses incurred by the appearance of two demons that were unleashed within our hold the day of my father’s birthday celebration, the number of men he had available to send to aid anyone must surely be limited. It was not my disappearance which may have prevented his quick response, but the difficulties of replacing skilled men at arms. And it is my understanding, that your vassals threw back the attack two weeks ago, which is truly a blessing if Feldholm has fallen to goblins. Is that not your daughter’s home?”

Lord Alestor leans back, considering my words, “Yes. Rebecca…I don’t know what I would do were I to lose her. And yes, your brother did suffer heavy losses. Unfortunate. I…demons you say?”

=Persuasion 15-
“Yes, a pair of demons unleashed by some cultists near Farhold proper. Capable of travelling unseen until they attack. Wiped out a squad of our men by surprise, and terribly difficult to hunt down. We killed two of them, but a third may have escaped,” I explain. “But tell me again, where is this wine from?” I take another sip, trying to steer him back to the matters that most interest him.

“Irongate, would you believe it? Dwarves can make good wine?” he laughs.

-Deception 12 vs Alestors insight of 4-
I shake my head, “Oh, my father rarely indulges in such luxuries as this must be. Sometimes, he fails to understand how life is to be enjoyed.”

And soon, all matter of state are forgotten as wine flows, food is passed around and performers dazzle with feats of skill and daring.

Q: Am I able to slip away as the evening rolls on? Likely Exceptional No Q: Does Alestor exert himself? Likely Exceptional No
As I attempt to get up and excuse myself, Lady Vanessa, the mistress, reaches over and grabs my arm, “You cannot leave so early. The night is young! Stay and partake!” she signals my cup be refilled, and I am compelled to oblige her again…and yet again.

-Topic Rewards-(Generate conversation partner)
At some point, I feel myself being led out of my seat by the older nobleman that was sitting to my right, a lord…Tredon? Of Fillnet? As the band plays, I feel him press up against me as he leads me in a dance. I am not really aware of any others dancing, besides the circus. “I understand a great bounty was offered for your recovery?” he whispers in my ear.

Q: Does he get frisky? Likely Yes Perception 5 (I’m not quite cognizant) Sonder’s perception 17
“I…wouldn’t know,” I reply sleepily, as his hand works its way around to my ass and I feel him more firmly against me.

-Sonder intimidation 14-
Suddenly, Tredon is pulled away from me and I half hear Sonder’s voice. Then a firm hand takes my wrist, and I am pulled swiftly through the halls. There are echoes of laughter and music in my ears and my head is dizzy.

Then I am lying on a soft, feathered bed. I feel a raspy tongue, and cat’s whiskers against my cheek. “Goodnight Princeling,” I mutter as I drift off to sleep.

Ep 20: Scene 63: Threshing 33rd-Interrupt Event-Overthrow Technology
Chaos Factor: 4

The banging on my door was like a string of thunderclaps! I sat up, nauseous, with a pounding headache, still in my dress from the night before as I bid Sonder enter. He advises me to dress quickly so we can depart before the Baron wakes from his stupor, lest we find ourselves invited for additional festivities. Half aware of what he is saying, I nod my agreement and dress for the road after he carries Warren out to the wagon for me.

I search my satchel repeatedly for any Hair of Dog, but realize I had not kept any when I left Oldenstone that morning. I’ll just have to suffer instead!

I shake my head and walk out to the courtyard, just as the sun begins to peek over the horizon. Then a cock crows and it too, rattles my head. I see my cart, abandoned by the stables, but Haggi sits up on the bench of a proper carriage next to the soldier who is driving it. Her girls, and Princeling ride inside, their baggage and mine piled up on the roof. Warren is inside I see when I take a look.

Sonder leads a horse over to me, but I shake my head, and climb inside the carriage instead, then nod towards the captain, and he, graciously, signals for his men to form and head out without barking the order, while I lean against the side of the carriage and try to get a little more sleep.

-Encounter-Townsperson tries to start a fight-
Suddenly, I hear a “thwak” against the side of the carriage, then another! And Sonder yells, “Put them on the ground!” There is yelling as I lift my head and look out the carriage window to see several of our men pushing through a group of bystanders and pinning a pair of youths against the wall of a nearby building.

“Hold up!” I call to Sonder, who halts the column. I climb out of the carriage and see clumps of shit hanging smeared against its side. I shake my head and walk over to the two lads my men have pinned.

-Intimidation 8-
“Is your argument with your lord? Or with me?” I demand.

Q: Do they say it’s with all lords? Likely Yes
“With you! With the Baron! With all you stinking leaches that steal our grain, hoard our rents and then let us suffer when crops are burned, families are murdered and homes are ransacked!” the youth yells.

I wince, not from the words themselves, but from the volume. Then I shake my head, “Best bring these two with us, else they’ll get their skulls cracked when some of Alestor’s court depart.” I yawn, then climb back into the carriage, “And they can clean this off before we let them go.” I add as an afterthought, then lean back into the seat as our journey gets underway. “Haggi? Wake me if you see Zebel’s caravan near the gates.”

Q: Is Zebel’s caravan departing now? 50/50 Exceptional No
I am dimly aware of us passing through the west gate of Westhold, which…is not likely the one Zebel would be using to get to Short Trot if I recall my maps correctly. I miss my father’s maps.

-Morning Encounter (using Wild tables as this area is currently in turmoil)-
“Are those deer?” Dora asks in awe.

Lisa retorts, “Stag! It’s a stag!”

I lift my head and look outside, “Red deer. Fast and strong,” I gently inform the girls, smiling. “A joy to hunt.”

Then i remember our captives, and take a look outside to see they are marching alongside my men, but stumbling a bit trying to keep pace. “Hold up, captain!” I yell to Sonder, and the column comes to a stop.

I climb out of the carriage once more, and signal for the captives to be brought before me. “You may kneel,” I inform the pair of youths.

Q: Do they kneel? Likely No
The two lads stand there, defiantly staring at me. I nod my head, “You do realize that if one of my father’s tenants showed such disrespect, they’d be evicted from their homes and turned out into the Lonefields to find a new lord.”

Q: Are they homeless? Likely Yes (Close an NPC Thread-Gavin just got married)
“What’s it matter? Our homes are burnt up anyway!” one shouts out.

“Where did you live?” I ask.

“Bold Claim,” the other replies. I glance at Sonder who tells me it was razed entirely two months ago.

I sigh and turn back to the men, “I’m sorry that your lords have failed you. Clean up the carriage and you can go.”

Q: Will they clean it up? 50/50 No
“Clean it your own damned self!” the first one shouts.

“Enough with the yelling,” I reply, clutching my head.

“They come home with us, then push them out towards Saddler’s Rest. If they want to live without lords, that’s the best place for them,” I command Sonder. Some of our men chuckle at the command.

Q: Do they understand where Saddler’s Rest is? Very Unlikely No (Intimidation 13)
“What about the…” he starts, as I interrupt with a flick of my wrist and the words “Porus” twice, removing the shit stains from my otherwise pristine transport. He shrugs his shoulders, “Your talents are infinitely more practical than I’d imagined.”

-Deception 15 vs their Insight 4-
I chuckle, “You should see what Eveline can do.” I notice the two lads look a little less brave than they did seconds earlier. “Don’t worry. I don’t turn people into toads. Cats maybe, but never toads.” I then climb back up into the carriage and let them see Princeling climb back up into my lap before allowing the guard to close the door.

Q: Is Jerome near the village gate? Likely No
A short time later, we are passing through the recently rebuilt gates of Allsfair where the beggar, Jerome, nearly caught me, had the guards believed him about who I was. I grin and look out the window for him, but…the village is devestated within the walls. “Hold up!” I command.

I climb down out of the wagon and spot the burnt out husk of the inn that stood last time I was here, where they had no room for Eveline and I. The millhouse is caved in, other shops and most of the barns and cottages that had survived the earlier raid no longer stood. “This is…the lady last night, who tricked me into condemning the baron. That was lady Alfifa? The lord of…this village, if I recall the guard’s words.”

Q: Do I see the Miller’s Wife? Very Unlikely No Q: Do I see the guards from before? Unlikely No
I look around, but see no familiar faces from my previous visit, when we first pretended I was mute. Instead, there are people trying to rebuild. “Lets’ stop here for a bit,” I order and we fall out to eat lunch.

Q: Does Alfifa return while we are in the square? Likely Exceptional Yes Q: Did Vanessa release some soldiers to her? 50/50 Exceptional No
I spot Lady Alfifa, with two of her men riding close behind her, ride into the square, but instead of turning towards her fire scorched manor house, she rides directly towards us.

Q: Does she apologize? 50/50 Yes
The lady dismounts and approaches me. I remain seated near Haggi and her children, Warren and Princeling at my side, Sonder with me. “I suppose you must hate me for last night? I did not wish to embarrass you, but my lord.” she looks around at the devastation, “It will take all winter to rebuild, but in the meantime…I don’t have the soldiers to repel another attack.” Then she turns towards me again, “I am sorry I put you in the middle. I know that I would never forgive anyone who did that to me, but please, know I meant no ill will towards you or your house.”

-Persuasion 21-
I nod, “I am unused to representing my house in court. That was the first time that I was ever anything other than an observer, or an apprentice helping her master. I thought I was a mere guest at a meal. You used me as a blade in a war of words. A weapon against your liege in his own hall. I won’t be so easily used in the future, but I thank you for the lesson. I pray I’ll take it to heart.”

I then stand, and look around, “When I passed through here, leaving my father’s lands. The inn was flooded with refugees, a beggar told your guards who I was! And a woman of means took pity, and gave my companion and I bread for the road. It is horrible what has happened to your people,” I look at her with sympathy, “I am sorry your pleas for help fall on deaf ears. You and your tenant truly deserve better.”

Q: Does she offer parting words? Likely No
“Move out!” I command, and Lady Alfifa watches in silence as my company gets back to their feet, yank my captives back up on theirs, and I climb up onto the horse that Sonder had offered me earlier in the day. I then take my place at his side as we lead our little caravan out of the village, leaving her and her troubles behind us.

-Encounter-Orcs!- (stealth 12 perception 22)
We continue south towards the remains of Goodwill, when one of the girls cries out, “Goblins!” I look back, and see that Princeling and Warren are both looking out the window the carriage…following their gaze, I spot a pair of orcs some distance away. My men are already forming up against an attack, crossbows loaded, rear guard watching for ambush. The two lads held captive are on the ground, each under the knee of a guard.

“Hold fire!” I command as Sonder and I study the situation.

-History 19-
The orcs are keeping their distance, watching us. “Those aren’t warriors, are they? Hunters?” I ask Sonder. He nods agreement. “And…our crossbows can’t cover that distance with any sort of lethal power…that’s why they are simply waiting, watching. Do you think they’ll tell their clan we are here?”

“Most likely. But that doesn’t mean they’ll attack us. Depends on how many they have. How dangerous they think we are,” Sonder advises.

“I can’t strike them with magic from here,” I explain.

“I wouldn’t want you to try. Those bows they carry…are powerful enough to hit us at this distance. If they are good enough shots,” then he chuckles, “Thankfully, most orcs aren’t good shots, but there is no need to make yourself a target.”

“Move on!” I command the company.

“Continue march!” Sonders clarifies.

Q: Do the orcs shadow us? Likely No Q: Has further damage been done? Unlikely No
After several minutes, the orcs can no longer be seen, seemingly having moved off from our trail, and we arrive at the ruined farmhouse where I once buried my possessions.

“Halt! Secure the perimeter,” I command everyone, then I rid back to the carriage and pull the shovel from the roof, then climb down from my horse with it.

“Where are you going, my lady?” Sonder asks.

I laugh, “Treasure hunt!” I then look back at the men for some familiar faces, “Janner! Cambre! With me!” I command, and the man who refused to spar me after my wards flared under his attacks now follows me, as does his heavily bearded fellow. “Check the cellar” I command when we reach the correct ruin.

-Perceptions vs Stealth-
Q: Is it unoccupied? Very Likely Exceptional No “Q: Refugees? Likely Exceptional Yes Q: Adults? Likely No Intimidate 5

There is a bit of screaming, then my men pull two children out from the cellar. I look them up and down, a boy and a girl, not more than twelve years old. “Who are you?” I demand.

Q: Do they talk? 50/50 No
“Let us go!” the boy demands while the girl, who is younger, screams and kicks.

=Persuasion 22-
I roll my eyes, “Let them go,” I command my men. “I’m going to ask again, who are you and why were you in that cellar?”

-Deception 14 vs Insight 17-
“I’m Tork. This is my sister Anya. That’s our home!” he insists.

Q: Are their parents alive? Very Unlikely No Q: Do they admit it? Very Unlikely No
“Oh? And are your parents alive and with you?” I ask.

-Deception 6 vs Insight 5-
“They’ll be back soon! You better not hurt us!” the girl demands.

Q: Was my stash taken? Nearly Impossible No Q: Is everything in good order? Nearly Certain Exceptional Yes
“Alright, we’ll just be a few minutes then,” I take my shovel downstairs while Janner watches the kids and Chambre follows me. With his help, I quickly pry up the floorboards and dig back out the tents I had buried before. I unroll the outer tent, the inner tent, and then open up my backpacks and saddlebacks to examine my books and clothing. I put my signet ring back on, now wearing both the Evenbough and Faust rings. I smile and pack everything up. “Help me carry this all back,” I tell Chambre and we load my recovered goods onto the roof of the wagon.

“Sorry about the hole in the floor,” I shrug. “Let the kids go.” I command and mount my horse once more, “Move out! Double time!” I command, “Sonder, lead us to Hamstrung. I want to be behind walls tonight.” I command and we change course after passing through the ruins of Goodwill.

-Encounter-Caravan-
We arrive at Hamstrung just as Zebel’s caravan is rolling into the village. The guards, on seeing my company of soldiers seem visibly relieved to have an extra twenty armed men on hand, eagerly waving us inside

-Roll to see who is at the gate…the replacement man and Sgt Arnalt-
As I pass the gate, I spot Sergeant Arnalt, who Lord Harald’s horse trampled the day before I left here last time, “Glad to see you are in good health, Sergeant Arnalt,” I say.

Q: Does he recognize me? 50/50 No Q: Does Zebel spot me? Likely Exceptional No
The sergeant looks at me in confusion. My hair cut short, and no longer dresses as a shepherdess, but as a simple tradeswoman, he doesn’t quite make the connection. I smile as I spur my horse inside and towards Lord Haralds manor house, “Sonder, have one of the men bring my pack we took from the cellar” I command, “then get whatever lodging is needed at the inn, reinforce the night watch with our men, short shifts so everyone is rested.”

Q: Does Magda recognize me? 50/50 Yes
At Lord Harald’s door, I dismount and knock, with Magda answering the door, her sour face surprised by my presence, “Ilsa Lovechild?” she asks.

I chuckle, “Yes. Please inform Lord Harald that I am here to use the guest room he promised when I sold him the Atlas of Thurm.”

Q: Does Lord Harald reveal his secret? Unlikely Yes
She scowls, and retreats inside. She returns a moment later to lead me inside. Lord Harald rises on my entry into his hall, “You may leave us, Magda,” he commands, and she huffs as she leaves. Then the noble bows, “Lady Yseldra Faust. Please forgive my…discourteous….bargaining technique last time we crossed paths. I did not realize who you were until a letter arrived after your departure.”

I grin, “Eveline suspected you were on to us. Why did you not send men in pursuit? I heard their was a bounty offered.”

He shrugs, “A noblewoman in flight, posing as a shepherdess? Defending my village against orcs? Pausing her flight to help us in dire times? Why would I betray such a woman.”

I extend my hand, that he might kiss my ring, “You are truly a man of honor, Lord Harald. Anyway, I have arrived with an escort and am returning home. I’ve commanded my captain to disperse my men to assist yours at watch tonight when they are not resting in the inn. Captain Sonder should be given a guest room if you have a second available, and he shall be joining us for dinner, per our agreement over the book. Also, I have an injured dog who will be staying with me, along with my cat. I trust… I’m sorry if I sound demanding.” I shrug. “It has been a long day.”

Q: Is he good with all of this? Very Likely Yes -Performance 16- Q: Are they impressed? Very Likely No
Having kissed my ring as a token of respect, he orders Magda to prepare food for my men and I. After bringing Warren inside and getting him fed and settled, Sonder and I, with Haggi, Lisa and Dora, dine with Lord Harald while food is brought out to my men. I relate the full tale of my flight from home, why I left, how I passed through the Lonefields, to Hamstrung, then through Westhold into Oldenstone, became Talia Evenbough, built my business, twice narrowly avoided capture, ventured north to Cragfall, discovered the offer of reconciliation and then began my journey home.

Though they find the story incredible, both Hagran and Sonder point out mistakes I made and the folly of my habit of intervening on others’ behalf when I could have concealed myself better by minding my own business rather than aiding those in need.

Q: Does Haggi speak? Likely No
I shrug, “You are both correct. I would never have been discovered or drawn attention to myself had I avoided villages, ignored those in need, and lived the life of a hermit. But that is not the person I am. When I see people in need, I must help. I am of noble blood, and it is the duty of our station to defend those beneath us.” I admonish them. Then considering my prisoners, “Even those who don’t wish such help or recognize it for what it is.”

Haggi and her daughters then retire to the inn where lodging was found for them and my soldiers, while Sonder and I each retire to the guest rooms we are shown. After changing Warren’s bandages, I snuggle against my brave protector while Princeling settles down beside us. Soon, I am fast asleep.

I wake to the pitter patter of rain against the shutters of the guest room. Opening the narrow window, I see that it isn’t raining particularly badly. I hear the sounds of oxen being yoked to their wagons, and some of Zebel’s men seem to be getting ready to travel in spite of the rain.

I shake my head, dress for the road, then go to knock on Sonder’s door. When there is no answer, I realize he is likely already in the hall and sure enough, he is there, with Lord Hagran and a few of the lord’s men eating breakfast.

On seeing me, the Lord rises, bows to me, then picks up the Atlas of Thurm, which was sitting beside him at the table, and drops it on the table before the empty seat next to Captain Sonder.

“I had not realized who you were, when i compelled you to sell this to me. On hearing the story last night, Captain Sonder offered a letter for credit from your house to purchase it back. I agreed,” he shrugs.

“Does the letter require my seal?” I glance at Sonder. He nods, and I examine the letter, pour the wax, and seal it as Yseldra Faust. “Thank you both.” I nod to each of them, “As i come across pieces of interest near Hamstrung, rest assured, I will send transcriptions your way, Lord Hagram.”

Then looking down at Captain Sonder’s plate, I ask, “What do you think of this weather? Half a dozen wagons crossing the Lone Fields while it is already raining? I’d hate to see them stuck in the mud. I think we, and Zebel’s caravan which is also going south, should wait until…perhaps tomorrow? Wouldn’t you agree?”

Q: Does Sonder agree? Very Likely Yes
“I’d rather not cross in mud. Not when there is no urgency in doing so. Do you intend to command this, Master Zebel, to wait?” Sonder raises an eyebrow.

“No. He is free to cross if he wishes, but I will go to the inn, and suggest to him that his company wait and cross with us…tomorrow, if the weather is fair and the earth is firm. I shall return shortly,” I step towards the door, then turn back to Lord Hagram, “Thank you again, for returning my book. I still expect your hospitality in future visits.” I wink at him, then head out to the inn across the village square.

Q: Are the caravaners still getting ready to leave? 50/50 No
As I head over to the inn, I notice the caravaners have started unyoking the oxen, I chuckle and shake my head, then…a well dressed villager is bowing before me, “Good maiden,” he speaks, “please forgive my boldness, but who is the gracious soul who arrived with an escort from Farhold last night? Are you her handmaid?”

I smirk. For while my clothing is certainly high quality, naturally, with hair cut short and dressed for riding, not courtly functions, of course I a can be mistaken for a high ranking servant. I glance back towards the carriage, “It belongs to the Lady Yseldra Faust. Daughter of the Lord of Farhold,” I turn back towards the man, “But who are you?”

“I am Eracle the Miller. An elder in our community and a close friend to Lord Hagram, helping advise him as to his tenant’s concerns,” the miller boasts.

I nod, “Most interesting. But what cause is that for you to ask about Lady Faust?”

-His deception 13, my insight 24-
“Ah, well…I was…curious is all. We don’t often see such carriages here, and with such a large escort? Most unusual,” he stammers.

-Intimidate 7-
I nod, “I suppose that it is. Of course, the last time someone expressed interest in Lady Yseldra’s travel, she was very nearly robbed on the road a few miles away. The scoundrels told their friends to be on the watch for you. There wasn’t much blood spilled.” I smirk, “None from her escort, to be sure.”

He snorts with sort of a smirk on his face, “Truly. Why say such things? By your leave,” he nods, then walks away.

-Zebel’s insight 9-
I roll my eyes, and continue inside the inn, looking around for Master Zebel who is speaking with his guide and guards, “Master Zebel,” I approach his table.

“Oh, you did catch up? Did you meet your friends? It seems there is a company of men from Farhold here too. I’m hoping they might cross with us. It looks like they have also decided to wait out the rain,” he observes.

-Deception 3 vs his insight 5-
“Yes, Master, they have,” I nod, “I was speaking with their captain only a few minutes ago, ensuring that I might cross with them, and you as well, if you so chose. Their captain, Sonder I believe his name is, was most amenable to escorting both of our parties,” I smile.

-His perception 10-
He looks up, studying me, “You..you spoke with their captain? But he’s not here in the inn. His men said he was at the….manor house…with…Yseldra Faust?”

“Baron Faust’s demon slaying witch daughter whose tower your stones are bound for? Very interesting,” I muse tapping my chin, “Oh yes, I am her. And our two companies will cross together, if it pleases you. There is safety in numbers, after all.” I smile.

-His deception 3, my insight 10-
Q: Is he cool with that? Very Likely Exceptional No Q: Does he decide to hurry instead? Likely Yes

“Um…safety in numbers. I agree,” he nods, suddenly looking very uneasy.

-Persuasion 9-
I close my eyes, realizing I’ve terrified him, “please forgive me, good Master. I did not mean to frighten you so. But I ask you, what harm have I caused you and yours, truly? Is it not safer for us to travel together? Or shall you leave your stones here, and I order materials from Truestone instead?”

“We…could leave our stone here? Will I be paid?” Master Zebel asks, cautiously.

I pull out a sheet of parchment from my satchel, ink, quill, and I begin writing out a note for payment, “How much is the shipment worth?” I set down a candle and with a snap of my finger, ignite it to ready some wax for my seal. He gives me the price, and I write out two notes, sealing each with both the Faust and Evenbough seal. “This one, take to Lord Alestor for payment. He will be reimbursed when he forwards it to my father. The second, take to Lord Hagram, and ask where he wishes you to leave the stone. He can undoubtedly use it with some of the repairs or to reinforce some of his defenses. And…if you fear my kind so much, bear in mind that every lord has a witch at his court, often more than one. Refusing business to one house or another is certainly unwise, especially as only the wealthiest houses build from stone.” I then rise, “And I had other work in mind for you as well.” I shake my head, and leave the inn.

Q: Does Zebel reconsider? 50/50 No
Zebel tentatively reaches forward, then snatches the letters away. Then rising from the table, he hurries out the door of the inn.

Q: Did others notice the candle trick? 50/50 Exceptional Yes (personalities generated last time I was in town) Q: Does Britta come over? Very Likely Yes
I purse my lips, and as I raise my hand to wave over the serving wench, I notice the innkeeper, whose name I recall hearing was Salvo, visibly cringes in fear. The serving woman seems to shake her head at him and walks over, “Fancy trick with the candle. Need a tankard? A bowl?” she asks.

I half smile, “Yes please, I would be most grateful.”

Q: Does Salvo ask me to leave? Likely No Q: Does she accept the second coin? Likely Yes Q: Does she talk about the witches? Likely No
“Sure thing, ma’am,” she replies then walks over, and while her employer cringes in fear, pours a tankard of ale and fills a bowl, adding bread, cheese and some slightly browning apple slices to the platter she carries it all on. “Here you go,” she says, and I hand a tenpiece. Then a second one, for she is showing kindness that I don’t seem to encounter often enough these days. She smiles and thanks me for the second coin, and I quietly eat my breakfast while Zebel returns, orders his men to move and unload the wagons. Several of my own men come down and soon the tavern is full of soldiers, relaxing and enjoying a meal, commenting on how surprised they are that they weren’t already on the move.

Q: Do the men notice me? Likely Yes Q: Are they comfortable speaking in my presence? 50/50 Exceptional Yes
“My lady,” one of the men bows on seeing me. The rest of the men quickly do the same, and I nod for them to rise and tell them to carry on.

-Intelligence check 16-
One of them says, “It is good to have you back with us, my lady.” And I recognize him as Oswyn, who helped test Karta and let her prove herself to my brothers.

-Persuasion 23, Deception 8, my insight 24-
“Oswyn, is it? It is good to be on my way back home, among friends,” I signal for the wench to fill a second tankard for everyone, “We won’t be marching today. Reinforce Hagram’s men a bit, but let’s enjoy the day, shall we?” I then move over to sit with Oswyn and his companions, learning about the recent earthquake, that my brother Severon has yet to return from Windhold, and about the tower being built for me.
I avoid explaining the reason for my departure, only that I was seeking to live as a commoner for a bit, to better understand our tenants, a lie that goes unchallenged, though I know none believe it, for several guards witnessed my father slap me on returning from killing the Balgura.

Q: Is he irritated? Likely Exceptional No
Sonder soon arrives, sees his men drinking, and then sees me with them, and nods approvingly, coming over to sit at my side as I nod for the trooper next to me to make space. “Thank you for your help this morning, Captain. That book is tremendously valuable to me, and I hated to part with it.” Then looking around the men, then back at the captain, “And please forgive if I undercut your authority. It seems that since we will not depart today, a second tankard for each man would do little harm this morning. We’ll have them help with watches throughout the day and night again, but….not this morning. I think…I should learn more about the men who serve my father’s house.”

“Your house,” Sonder corrects me.

I smile, “Yes. The house of Faust.”

-Topic-Experiences- Performance 12- Q: Is Barldek here? 50/50 Exceptional No Q: A local lord? Likely No
Janner, who I had sparred with and who helped me with the cellar yesterday, asks me to tell them about my travels. Where I had been and what I had been doing. I talk to them about my journey through war torn Westhold, posing as a refugee, crossing the Lonefields, settling in Oldenstone, setting up a shop in the market, training with the levies, narrowly avoiding discovery by Lord Casus and Sir Dallius, then slipping past my brother Mical a few weeks later. Travelling to Cragfall, stumbling across a band of ogres and having to slip quietly away, being ambushed by bandits on the road, then nearly murdered by their companions in the night, discovering a letter inviting me back home, and the journey back until I reunited with them in Westhold. The men listen with interest, making the occasional comment, or asking a question here and there. Afterwards, I ask how Barldek is doing, as I had not remained in town to see to his recovery after the demon, but learn that after recovering, he left my father’s service, perhaps joining a caravan or something, nobody there is sure.

Q: Does Magna put Haggi to work? Likely Yes
We while away the time, until Zebel and his men return from their work, then I bid my men a good day, and return to the manor house. I nod approvingly on seeing that Magda has put Haggi and Lisa to work. They seem pleased to help out. Then I retire to the guest room, where I tend to Warren, and begin transferring my Talia journal into my Yseldra journal, for I wish to consolidate my full story into a single volume over time.

-8 vs 14-
After dinner that night, Sonder and I play a game of chess using the set I had recovered from the cellar. He absolutely crushes me, for I have only played two serious games these last two months, and have lost my edge compared to him…today at least. I smile, “Thank you for being the one to fetch me.”

“It is my honor, my lady,” he nods.

After our game, I retire to bed, with Warren and Princeling at my side.

Ep 20: Scene 65: Threshing 35th-
Chaos Factor: 4-Altered reduce activity, add character

After loading up the carriage for travel, and gently placing Warren inside with the girls and seeing Haggi up into her place, I mount up and join Sonder near he head of the column and we set off south across the Lonefields while Zebel’s wagons head back north, or whatever. It’s no matter to me at this point.

As soon as we leave the cultivated fields around around Hamstrung, I spot the glint of steel in the distance, but before I can direct Sonder’s attention. I see someone walking towards us from that very direction. “Hold,” I tell Sonder, who relays the order back to the men.

Q: Is it a human? Likely Yes (Generate Character-female, elf, bard, level 6!)
A lithe young woman with a longblade on her hip and a lute and a heavy pack slung over her shoulder is walking towards us across the fields. “Hail friends!” she greets us, “Are you, perchance, heading south?”

I ride towards her, Sonder close behind, “Yes, we are,” then realizing what she was, I continue in elven, “If you are travelling south as well, there is safety in numbers.”

“Depends on the nature of the numbers,” she replies in her own tongue, “But I trust men more than orcs,” she gestures back to where I saw the glint of steel, an orc lies dead. “He came upon my camp just as I finished rolling up my tent.”

“Why did you not sleep in the village?” I ask.

“I arrived in the middle of the night, and do not like to approach guards at such a late hour,” she shrugs.

“Then walk with us…?” I gesture for her to offer her name.

“Mezieala the Muse,” she makes a light curtsy.

“Yseldra Faust of Farhold,” I nod, then switching to my native Norgard, “And this is my Captain, Sonder. If you wish, you might join my two of my young guests in the carriage. I am sure they would be fascinated to meet you.”

Q: Does she ask about the captives? Likely Yes
Mezieala looks at my little company, “Are they your guests as well?”

I snort, “Neither by my desire nor their choice, but I am taking them someplace where they are less likely to get themselves killed by their own folly.”

“If not your desire, then by whose?” she asks.

I consider this for a moment, “These men offended me, but had they offended others of my station, they likely would have been killed for their actions. I felt it best to move them someplace where they will not encounter others of my station, and where they can live as they claim to wish to live. A place far from nobles, where each man lives and works for himself alone.”

Q: Is she curious about this? Likely Yes
“But humans always live under lords in these lands. Where is this place?” she asks

“Saddlers Rest. It lays between Farhold and Faithstone and neither lord claims it. It is a refuge for those who desire to serve no lord,” I explain.

“They protect themselves?” she asks.

“Well enough, most of the time,” I shrug. “Please,” I gesture towards the carriage.

Q: Does she mount the carriage? Likely
“Thank you,” she smiles and nods her head, as one of my men opens the carriage door. Haggi regards her with her usual inscrutable face, while Lisa and Dora gaze at her in wonder as she climbs aboard and sits beside my injured Warren, causing Princeling to jump into Dora’s lap instead, much to the girl’s delight.

“Forward,” I nod to Sonder, who gives the command.

-Encounter-clouds of insects- Q: Do I recognize the tune? 50/50 Exceptional Yes Q: Elven? Unlikely No
We continue south as Meziela’s voice and notes from her lute sound from the carriage behind us, and recognizing the tune, I join her in singing the fey queen’s delight
“On a warm summer night if you time things just right,
You might see them aloft in the wood.
Silver lights from their wings shining brightly they gleam
Give them wide berth, oh yes, yes you should.
But if you draw close and they light on your nose
You’ll see something few mortals know
When the moons shine down full on a silvery pool
Opens gateways to palaces of gold
Enter inside and find truth through the lie but your story is lost in a dream
For the feast never ends nor yet begins without your lost soul’s lonesome scream.”

Sonder raises an eyebrow, “That tale takes an bad turn at the end.”

I shrug, “Fey…never trust them.”

-Topic-Friends-
We pause briefly to eat and stretch our legs and Meziela asks, “How did you come to have such delightful young friends as these? And you are their mother?” she asks Haggi.

Haggi nods, and I explain, “I came to know them in Oldenstone, and have offered their mother work in my father’s keep.”

Q: Did the girls tell her? Likely Yes
She looks me up and down, “How does a noble woman come to know a beggar and her children, save her life, and then decide to take them to a castle to live surrounded by wealth and splendor?”

Q: Is Sonder surprised? Very Likely Yes
Sonder looks at me in surprise, for I had not explained the details of my relation with Haggi, but I answer, “She was a friend to me when I had few. Is that such a strange thing, to favor one’s friends?”

“Not to favor one’s friends, but to become friends at all. I thought that humans who believe themselves noble would not befriend those who believe themselves common. I have never heard of such a thing,” she puzzles.

-Persuasion 18-
“It is more common than you think. Most nobles regard their favorite servants as friends of sorts,” I suggest.

“Of sorts, but not as peers,” she clarifies. I shrug, for she is not incorrect.

“I suppose you are right, but Haggi was a friend to me, so I shall see to her well being,” I insist.

“A patron. Not a friend. For she will ever be in your debt,” she insists.

-Persuasion 16-
“If you must view it in that way, I suppose you are not wrong. Yet there is nothing I will do to change that, for it is the nature of things, attempting to make it otherwise has borne me nothing but a broken heart. So it will be as it is. And nothing more, nor anything less,” I explain from the sorrow in my heart.

She considers my words, purses her lips and raises an eyebrow, but says nothing. I call an end to our break and we continue on.

-encounters, birds, monument-
We continue throughout the day, a great many birds take flight, then light some distance away. Princeling watches eagerly from the carriage but Lisa keeps him from springing out after them. Then we pass by the sight of three stones rising up from the grasslands nearby, painted in blues and reds, some markings from one of the orcis tribes. My desire to get everyone home safely outweighs my curiosity, so we press on after the sun dips below the horizon. “Perhaps I had best ride up front in your place?” calls out Meziel as the light fades.

I halt the column for a moment, and pull some darkwater from my satchel, pouring one vial over my eyes, the fading light now bright as the midday sun. “Pour this over your eyes,” I command Sonder, which he does, then blinking, looks around in surprise.

“Your magic is…amazing,” he grins.

I laugh, “This is hardly true magic, but merely an alchemists trick. Our eyes might be a little watery in the morning, but for now, we see,” I shrug. “Let’s press on.”

-Force March- DC 11 save failed, DC 12 passed, so one level of exhaustion-encounter, wild cattle- (Generate Meadcross missing details)
Sonder gives the order, and we continue our march, passing grassland cattle, which are thankfully wild, and not the herd of some orcish clan. And though I begin to drift a bit in the saddle, only to have Sonder reach over to steady me, we ultimately cross the river into cultivated lands and follow the road up to the village of Meadcross.

Q: Do they let us in? Very Likely Exceptional No
We arrive at the village gates just as the heavens open up and a torrent of rain begins to pound the earth. I pull my cloak from my pack as the men do theirs. Sonder calls up to the watchman, “Open up! Lady Yseldra Faust and her company seek shelter for the night.”

“Go away! The gate is closed through the night!” retorts the sergeant.

-Intimidate 16 (target 20 due to the Exceptional No-(Guard intelligence-1, he doesn’t recognize Sonder)
“Did you not hear me?” Sonder challenges the man as a lighting flashes through the sky and a peel of thunder shakes our very bones. “Lady Faust requires shelter from the storm!”

The guard strains forward in the night, his companion reluctant to raise his crossbow lest the string get wet, “Lady Faust is gone! Now you had best be gone!”

-Persuasion 14-
Captain Sonder looks at me, awaiting my command. I ride forward, “I had hoped not to wake your lady, but please send someone to tell Lady Elsora that her friend Yseldra has come for a visit and to share a cup of her husband’s most excellent mead.”

“Go away! Or we will fire upon you!” the guard warns.

“We go around,” I start, then remembering the carriage, “We go back out of bowshot, pitch tents, rest outside.”

“We could…” Sonders starts, but I hold up my hand and repeat my orders. He nods, and we fall back, set up tents in the cold and miserable rain, in the dark.

-Night encounter-Caravan-impossible, no caravan would be moving at this hour-
I carefully bring Warren down into my tent, and light a candle to check and clean his wounds. Sonder helps Haggi set up my other tent for her and her girls. The lads are lashed to a carriage wheel for safe keeping, allowed to suffer through the storm. Mezieala has her own tent. And so…we set down for the night, and I sleep inside a tent set up on muddy ground throughout a horrible storm. “Welcome home to Farhold,” I laugh to myself as Warren, Princeling and I snuggle together under my blankets for warmth.

“Cut that out!” I exclaim, gently pushing Warren off my leg. “I’m glad you are feeling better, but no!” I chastise the animal. Then laugh, because this is what Eveline was predicting when she named the dog after the Lord.

I then get up and start packing my gear, muttering my cleaning incantation as I do so, for I hate to roll up a muddy bedroll.

The rest of the camp is also getting ready for the road. The lads shiver, completely soaked, and muddy, afforded little shelter beside the carriage for they could not fully get under it the way they were bound. Mezieala’s words hang on me.

“Let them go,” I tell the soldier coming by to check on them. “They’re free. It was not my place to try and protect them. Give them each a spear, a waterskin, and three days food.” I count out ten gold crowns and ten silver tenpieces, and toss them to the ground in front of the boys.

“Farhold town is 20 miles southwest, if you follow along behind us, you’ll be there before nightfall. Westhold, follow the road back the way we came. Northwest is the village of Spurdon. They always need lumbermen and farm laber. Southeast is Oxmere then Wierstead. Follow the river east from Wierstead, and you may reach Hammerfell. Saddler’s Rest is where you can live with no lords. It is southeast of Farhold lands. There are a few ways to get there, but a man who needs no lords needs no further directions.” I snort. Then shaking my head, take a few bites from the food in my satchel, then mount my horse, “I want to get moving as soon as the gates open, quick with the morning meals.”

Q: Do we get through the village before the Lord wakes? Likely No
The gate soon opens an farmer’s head out to their fields to gather grapes from the vines that bound many of their plots, and Sonder signals our company forward. Then I see, Lord Leofstan and his wife, Elsora, standing in the court with a squadron of armed men behind them and what was initially a look of wariness becomes a look of shock and despair on realizing who leads the armed company camped outside his village overnight. The pair immediately fall to their knees, and their men follow seconds later.

“You may rise,” I command, guiding my horse before them. “Where is the watchman from last night, who denied us shelter?”

One of the men, ashen faced, steps forward, “Forgive me, My Lady. I thought it was a trick!”

“Then you did well. But please, send a runner to the house next time that your lord might decide whether I speak truth. My men deserved shelter from the storm,” I then spur my horse onward.

“Yse?”Elsora calls out, “We are sorry. Please allow us to serve you and your men. We can prepare a meal and order baths to warm them from the cold,” she offers.

-Persuasion 17-
“Thank you, Ellie. You’ve not caused any offense. There is nothing to repair, and I am eager to return home. I am sure that my father will want to throw some feast to celebrate my return, and as I relate my tale to the court, you and I can laugh together at this misunderstanding by your diligent soldier on the eve of my return home,” I grin.

Elsora, who knows me well enough from her time serving my mother, though she is six years older than me, seems reassured, but her husband, ever the skeptic, blanches a bit at the thought of what other lords might think of the incident. But that is not my concern.

-Morning encounter-caravan-generate- (1-3 Westhold, 4-5 Oldenstone, 6 Kardashev territories)
We make good time, but are still surprised when just before reaching Honeyfeld, we spot a herd of horses being driven by Johann the Hoarse’s men. His wagons follow shortly behind. “Move to the side,” I call back to Haggi’s carriage driver so that the herds and freight wagons might use the road. As Johann approaches, I call to him, “Master Johann, do you travel to Westhold? Or Oldenstone?”

“Westhold…My Lady!” he replies bowing from his horse as he realizes who I am.

Q: Does he agree? Nearly certain Yes
“Very good. I am going to send a couple of mules with you. There is a cart that belongs to me in Lord Alestor’s courtyard. A simple machine, really. If it is still there, abandoned, please bring it back to me. If not, then sell the mules and bring me whatever coin you get for them,” I command, then ride back, and order the two shoulder rubbing mules I hadn’t even bothered naming transferred to his care.

“Yes my lady, as you command,” he bows.

Q: Will he do this task as well? Likely Yes
I smile, “And let me know the next time you go to Oldenstone. I need a message delivered to someone there, and I perhaps need her escorted back, if you would be so kind as to remember my request.”

“It would be an honor to serve you,” he bows, “Though I do not often travel that far.”

I nod, “I know. You usually trade through Hammerfell or Faithstone, do you not? Better markets,” I grin.

“Indeed, my lady. But…Westholds misfortunes require a large number of replacement mounts,” he winks.

“Misfortune for them, good fortune for you. Do not squander it, for Fortune waxes and wanes, while Fate watches coldly to the end,” I reply and we each nod our heads towards one another before going our separate ways.

-Honeyfeld-Q: Is my cart recovered? Very Likely Exceptional No (delete from equipment list, and I get half value for the mules in a couple of weeks, adding to inventory now)
We arrive at the village of Honeyfeld, and rather than announcing myself to the lord, I simply halt our caravan in front of the Wax and Wane. Sonder starts to warn me about the tavern, but then reconsiders as I dismount and step inside. The crowd is rough looking, armed thugs, and the innkeeper himself is an impressive looking man. “My companions and I are hungry,” I tell the man as several of my soldiers spill into the place, along with Haggi, her children, and the elf Merieaza. Tankards and bowls for all, extra meat if you have it, and bread, lots of bread,” I command, to make up for the shortened breakfast.

Q: Does word reach the lord that we are here? Likely No
The innkeeper and his wenches quickly pour what they have, bringing me the first bowl, but I wave it off, seeing that Haggi’s children are first served, then the men before Sonder and I take anything. Of course, this means that our food is fresh from the second pot, but that cannot be helped. Merieaza is soon playing a tune to amuse the men, and the other patrons of the tavern with a tune that often brings a laugh:

“One day I saw it sitting on a log
It was a very tiny little frog
And it croaked and it sang, sitting by the river bank,
until a giant fly came along.
Later on that day I saw a hog.
It was sitting on that same old log.
And it squealed and it stank sitting by the river bank,
until a hungry butcher came along.
Later on that night I sat to dine.
Filling up my gut with bread and wine.
On a tray was brought a pig,
stuffed with raisins and with fig,
and when I cut it open found a frog.
That tiny little frog was from the log.”

Q: Do the men chat with me? Likely No
“So, Haggi. We’ll be in my father’s house in a couple of hours. Merieaza made a good point, that I am…a patron, not a friend to you. I don’t know how to unmake that. I would give you coin, and let you to your own devices, but I have dragged you from your home in Oldenstone, and I have lived as a refugee. Even with coin, it is hard, and I haven’t enough to give to make it easy, but would still then be your patron. I will find you work in the keep if you still wish it, or coin and jewelry to help you make your own way.”

Q: Does she want the job in the keep? Very Likely Yes
“Elves don’t know the ways of men. And yes, you have taken care of me. Parents watch out for their kids. I will serve your family. The man who raised you must be worth serving,” Haggi replies.

I sadly smile, “Thank you.”

After we eat, the company mounts up and we are back on the road.

Chaos Factor: 4

We halt the company a bowshot shy of the gates of the town. I climb back into the wagon, checking Warren’s injuries, pressing gently against the wound as I inspect it, I wince more than he does, then I rebandage him, for I fear I may not see him at all the rest of the day once I reach my father’s house.

Then I ask the others to leave the carriage for a moment, and change into the gown Baron Alestor forced me to wear. I don the gold earrings, and necklace I took from the bandits who tried to murder me, and both of my signet rings, plus the platinum elven ring from Craghall. I cleaning spell and rosepaste, and I am ready to arrive, not as Faust’s adventerous daughter, but as a noble woman of rank and wonder.

Stepping out of the carriage, the men look at me in awe. They have, most of my life, only seen me dressed in breaches for travelling or the hunt. Even those on duty at court events have seen me dressed simply and modestly for one of my station, never arrayed in jewels or dressed to…entice. As one, they fall to their knees. Haggi pulls her daughters to theirs, for the stand gazing in wonder.

Only captain Sonder seems to have his wits about him, “I’ll have the men switch saddles for you that you may ride thus.”

I nod, and it is done. Sidesaddle, I enter my father’s home town.

At the gate, Sergean Wolstan is on duty along with some unfamiliar faces, “Bow, damn you lot,” he commands the recruits, “That is our lady, Yseldra Faust!” he says, taking his knee. I nod to them as I pass by and they rise back up, returning to their duties as I leave them behind.

As we proceed through the market street, a group of pilgrims led by a white robed priestess block the square before us, deep into their prayers, “Move them out…” Sonder begins, but I hold up my hand.

“Just wait. There is no hurry,” I smile, listening to their words, and echoing them quietly.

-Reaction 6-
When they are done, the priestess looks up, and scowls, raising a hand towards me, “Excess and decadence! Succor and temptations from the Dark Brother that lead men astray! Behold this woman…”

“Halt!” I command Sonder and half a dozen of his men who were already pushing their way through the crowd to reach her.

Q: Does the woman realize she nearly got put on the ground? Likely Yes Q: Does she continue? Unlikely No
The priestess looks at my men, then back up to me, falling silent.

I nudge my horse forward, “I do not believe we have met. Are you Mother Muriel’s replacement?”

Q: Did she arrive with Father Kavin? Very Likely Likely
“No. I am Sister Castra,” she explains, “I arrived with Father Kavin.”

-Intimidate 4-
“I do not know him either. I am Lady Yseldra Faust. We shall speak again on Godsday when I kneel at the temple. You can speak ill of me then…or behind my back after I pass by. But not before my men,” I scowl, and signal my company to move through the square since prayers are complete.

“Your station does not raise you above Freia’s laws,” Sister Castra challenges.

“Nor does yours ensure you represent them. That was Mother Muriel’s hubris, and hubris is from the Dark Brother. Pray for your own soul whenever you pray for mine,” I admonish her as we my men pass by. I join the column at the rear, then move up to the front once more.

-Smell of Alcohol-
Ep 20: Scene 68: Faust Keep (1st)
Chaos Factor: 4 -Altered increase in activity

Entering the courtyard of the keep, I dismount, and hand off my horse to the stablehand, who reeks of ale. “Not you!” I command, handing the reins to one of my men instead, directing the soldier, “Tell Marshal Milliam to have this lad sobered up before he works again. If he doesn’t stay sober, he must be turned out. Drunkard’s don’t handle Faust horses,” I glare at the hand.

I then go back to the carriage where Mezieala, Dora and Lisa are climbing out while a soldier helps Haggi down from the driver seat. “Transfer our goods to my room, and to whatever guest room Beth has avaiable until their long term situation is worked out. And carry Warren up to my room as well,” I instruct, ignoring that Princeling has already dashed away towards the gardens where we first met. “Catch a big, fat mouse!” I call after him with a grin.

After directing things among the men, I start towards the hall, already bustling with activity as household servants, my parents, and siblings pour of the the house towards me. I am caught off guard as I turn to see them.

-Who reaches me first? 1 Meriel, 23 Faust, 4 Eveline, 5 Erena, 6 Verna, 7Bertran, 8 Mical- Q: Is Eveline in love? Likely Exceptional No
Racing ahead of them all, Eveline rushes towards me, “Oh, thank the goddess you are safe!” she gasps with a smile, then looking at how I am dressed, she grins broadly, “You…you look stunning!”

I smirk, “Thank you.” Then we stand, awkwardly in front of each other for a moment, and I finally say, “You were right. About love. Enjoy it while it is there. But don’t expect it to last. I didn’t understand until I had to choose whether to leave you behind, or be captured. And I realized…you would never feel for me as I felt for you. And…I let it die.”

Evelien nods, with a trace of sorrow in her eyes, “Thank you.”

“How have you…” I begin

Q: Scourge? Likely No Q: Drinking? Very Likely Yes
“Farhold mead is the finest in the land, and hair of dog mitigates the worst of it. Best of all, since I have been welcomed as a guest and not a servant, even if I am hungover, I don’t have to get up with the cock’s crow,” she shrugs.

I laugh and we embrace as my father approaches. I release her and look to him, then bow.

“Forgive my flight, father, but I would not marry Lord Sigric against my will and against your promises. If you still demand it, I will. But I wish to remain free,” I state plainly.

-Persuasion 15-
My mother and Eveline both gasp at this offer I make. Mical looks from my face to my father’s while Erana shakes her head in furious disagreement. Verna raises an eyebrow, wondering what game I am playing at.

Q: Does he command me to marry? Nearly Impossible Exceptional No
“Forget my past folly! You are my daughter. A member of my house! Strong in will. Fearless in battle, and more cunning than a fox to have outwitted every search party and bounty hunter sent to find you. Your talents are wasted in the north. I want you by my side, for as long as you will suffer your old man,” he blurts out, and wraps me in his arms.

Arm in arm, we enter the great hall, where a feast is prepared, not for the lords of the land, but for a household reconciled.

Eveline sits by my left hand, my dearest, truest friend, but no longer lovers. Erana and Mical sit across from us, Mical, chastened in his ambitious efforts to use me as a pawn, and his bride, my close confidant of many years, eagerly devouring the stories I share of our adventures. Bertran beams at hearing his sister’s exploits, and even his wife Verna is impressed, for now, I dress as one of my station, and not so far below it as I had always done before, and the trappings of rank, jewels and fine clothes are something she has always appreciated. And my mother, whose letter mended the wound, sits by father’s side, weeping tears of joy, as her family is united once more. And Meleiaza, a wandering minstrel, plays a tune, and learns a story that she will earn a great deal of coin from over the years as she travels from taverns to courts across the land, though commoners won’t believe it, and lords will scoff, but some few…some few might be inspired by Yseldra’s tale.

Epilogue:
Q: Are Haggi’s children well placed within the keep? Very Likely Exceptional Yes Q: Does Rhena reconsider on receiving a formal letter? Likely

Warren recovers quickly now that he has better rest than a cart or carriage allowed. Eveline and I continue working together, studying how to control her magic and researching whether a counter can be etched into her flesh with ink. Haggi becomes a laundress, while I place Lisa under Master Esdras, to learn to care for pigeons and falcons. Young Dora is instructed in reading, for at her age, anything is possible. I send a letter to Rhena, sealed both by Evenbough and Faust, along with a purse of coins and an offer for the caravaners with the letter to bring Lucilla to me as an apprentice, and a month later, Lucilla does join me at my father’s keep, where Eveline and I begin teaching her the secrets of herbs and healing. And I continue to worship, visiting the temple regardless of how I am received, for the goddess has seen me through a great many trials. And in the evenings, Sonder and I play our games of chess, testing each other.

Until…
