Q: A gift? 50/50 No (Well,there goes that idea)
Ep 16: Scene 16: Great Harvest 32nd
Chaos Factor: 5 (Altered Scene Add Object, Light, Healing)
I wake up, alone in bed once again, except for Warren and Princeling who have taken advantage of Eveline’s absence. I get up with a yawn, dress myself and head downstairs for breakfast, which Dorak has prepared.
“Mini’s also still out?” I ask. That’s when I notice Ivor pushing a small vial towards my plate.
“A gift in return for your gift,” Ivor shrugs with a weak smile. “Doubt you’ll ever need it, but…it mends a wound. A cut, a bruise, like it never happened if it wasn’t too deep.”
“Trollblood?” I ask, raising an eyebrow.
“You know it? Yes. Trollblood,” he agrees.
Q: Are Gavin and Defris also here? 50/50 Yes
“Thank you, Ivor. I do appreciate it,” I smile as I tuck it into my belt and then join him and Dorak for breakfast. “Gavin and Defris didn’t go with them, did they?”
Q: Is Defris still in bed? Likely No
“No, of course not,” Dorak laughs. “Gavin’s already gone to the quarry, and Defris left with him to…wherever he goes. I prefer not to ask too many questions.”
I nod with a smile, “Understood.” Ivor finishes his meal, and then heads to the quarry as well. I eat, then give Dorak some Hair of Dog. “Boil up a pot of this for the girls, they’ll likely be wanting it when they return.” I shake my head.
“You aren’t much like your sister, are you?” Dorak asks.
I shake my head, “Apples don’t fall far from trees, but some lay where they fall, others can roll down a hill, be swept downstream, fall into the sea, wash up on a distant shore and be carried far inland by a curious tortoise. No, we aren’t much alike, but we are…sisters.”
“It’s my understanding from what you’ve told me of your mother that…you’re the one on the distant shore,” Dorak observes
Q: Does Dorak offer to help? Likely No
I nod agreement, “Have a good day. I’ve got to the cart loaded and to market.” Dorak nods agreement, and I head down to the cellar to pull out the cart, wheel it in front of the building, then start loading it up while Warren keeps watch. “Earning your worth, my friend,” I smile at the dog when I am done, and scratch behind his ear. “Let’s go.”

–
Q: Does Eveline return as I am leaving? 50/50 Yes
About to depart, I see Eveline and Mini walking down from the Low District. Eveline shakes her fist in mock outrage, “Where are you taking my cart, you thief?”
Q: Are they hungover? Unlikely No
“Mini, what have you done with my sister?” I laugh.
“Not I, but our friend,” Mini winks.
I shake my head, “Get inside, Dorak is brewing some Hair of Dog if the two of you need it.”
“No need,” Eveline grins, “I just need to change clothes and I’ll be along shortly.”
“You do that,” I laugh, then I start pushing up the hill towards the market district.
-Encounter-Local Character-Ivor-Huh? Just had breakfast with him, and…this isn’t the way to the quarry-
Q: Is Ivor selling someone Feywander? Likely Exceptional Yes
Heading up the street, I notice Ivor talking to a number of young quarrymen. From his expressions, gesticulations, and the small pouch in his hand, I can only assume he is selling Feywander to some new customers. I shake my head, and finally follow Eveline’s advice to mind my own business.

Q: Does Sgt Halpern cover market square on Heydays? Likely No (Generate the Lordsday, Heyday, Damesday market supervisor. Halpern gets Marketday, Sunday, Moonday)-Q: Does the sergeant just let me set up after base fee? Very Likely No
Reaching the market square, there is a sturdy looking sergeant present, different from the man before. “Who are you?” He asks, looking over my cart.
-Deception 22-
“Talia Evenbough, herbalist,” I reply. “I’m new in town, but set up on Market Day without any difficulties”
Q: Does he believe the part about no difficulties? Unlikely Yes
The sergeant raises an eyebrow in surprise, “That’s…unlike Halpern for a new vendor. Anyway, three tenpiece for an uncovered space for your cart. Looks like there are plenty of openings over there still.” he gestures towards a favorable looking space beside some produce stands setting up.
“Thank you. And your name?” I ask.
-Reaction 17 pretty strongly positive!-
He smiles, “Sergeant Ralgin.”
“Thank you, Sergeant Ralgin. Come by the booth later. I sell remedies for most aches and pains,” I offer.
“Bah! Healthy as a horse,” he boasts thumping his chest.
-Performance 8 to land the joke-
“Also flea powder for horses,” I laugh with wink.
“Agh! That’s…that’s bad,” Ralgin shakes his head.
“Funnier if my sister had said it. She’ll be along shortly, I’m sure,” I shrug, then head towards the stall space to set up.
Q: Does Eveline soon catch up? Likely Yes
Ep 16: Scene 17: The Market (32nd)
Chaos Factor: 5 (Expected Scene)
The market is only about half full, as is to be expected, but oddly enough, the musician with his lute, and the woman who sings with him from Market Day are both here, as is the man with his puppets. I wonder if they are locals? Then there is a dancer as well, with bells on her ankles and wrists. She looks foreign. Perhaps from Narossia? Eveline arrives about the same time as our potential customers, and soon joins me in hawking our wares.

-Immersion-See something written or carved and it worries me-
I notice a herald taking up a wanted poster at the edge of the marketplace. Heading over to examine it, it describes a bandit queen whose gang seems to lurk in the nearby hills. “The Emerald Queen…a green eyed seductress…tricks men into revealing secrets…eerily calm. Nearly two dozen in her gang. Bounty, 100 crowns” I mutter to myself as I read it, then return to my booth to tell Eveline.
“Green eyed seductress? She sounds fun!”, Eveline laughs, and I shake my head at her and sigh as the next customer walks up. Over the course of the day, we sell a lot of sageleaf tea, some hair of the dog, swamproot anti venom, and pain thief, and even a dose of feywander, which feels a bit strange after lecturing Ivor, but I warn my customer about the hallucinogenic effects and can tell they are in serious pain and mental anguish. And sometimes, that’s exactly what is needed.

-Encounters-None-Market Events-Inspection-
Late afternoon, a young watchman who can’t be much older than me stops by the booth, “Scales inspection!” he announces eagerly. “Hey, where’s your scale?”
-Persuasion 23-
“On my workbench. We don’t sell by weight, we sell by remedy. We have to measure it off correctly to brew it, or it won’t work right,” I shrug, “Might I interest you in some…mosquito balm? I’ve had to use it a couple of times while out gathering these past few days. Always a nuisance this time of year, especially if you have to patrol around the docks or up in the terrace.”
“How much?” he asks taking the small clay vial with interest.
“Half a crown, trooper…,” I raise an eyebrow.
“Poslan. Watchman Poslan,” he replies.
“Ah, well, it’s four ten pieces for Watchmen named Poslan,” I smile.
He grins, and pulls out the four silver coins, “Thank you…”
“Talia. Talia Evenbough. And this is my sister, Casia,” I introduce Eveline, and Poslan eagerly greets her as well, then moves on to the next booth.
The rest of the market day passes uneventfully, and by the end of the day we’ve cleared twelve and a half crowns. As we pack up, Eveline beams, “Really! In two days, we’ve nearly covered a month’s lodging!”
I laugh, “A couple of lucky sales, but yes. This is turning out to be…quite profitable. Let’s get home. Alehouse is open tonight, right?”
Eveline nods, “Best part! We should have a drink to celebrate.” I agree.
-Encounter-Work Gang, road construction-
Heading down Market Street, we see the main street is blocked off and we end up taking Spindle Way to bypass the busy work gang. “Wish they were in the quarry district. It isn’t up here that I trip on the street.” I mutter.
“Yeah, got to watch your footing around the quarry district”, Eveline agrees.
Soon, we are back home, unloading the cart, stowing everything and then dressing for the alehouse.

-Immersion-Memory from last year-
Ep 16: Scene 18: Alehouse (32nd)
Chaos Factor: 5 -expected scene-
As we dress, Eveline steps behind me and pulls my corset tight as i catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and for just a moment, I catch a glimpse of myself, just seventeen years old, here in Oldenstone, Baron Pond’s keep, one of his servants helping me dress for the evening’s festivities. His bride was so beautiful, and the wedding celebration, stretched nearly a month after her birthday. Pond and I slipped away to his library, and quietly played a game of chess while his new bride entertained her vassals. I turn my head, and can scarcely imagine that girl today, her hair long gone, the court finery as well. Eveline slaps my ass, breaking me from my reverie, “Let’s get downstairs! Their’s drinks to pour!”
I roll my eyes and grin, “Alright, alright…lets go.”
(Generate non-market patronage-7 customers) Q: Are all the usual suspects here? Very Likely-Yes
It is a quiet night, not unexpected. The three bickerer’s are here, plus Gavin, Defris, Ivor, plus…Reignald, not surprisingly. As Mini and Eveline start pouring bowls of stew and tankards of ale, I decide that…I don’t really need to be here. Those two, plus Dorak, can more than handle seven patrons. “I’m going for a walk,” I say to Eveline, then head out with Princeling tagging along behind.
Q: Does Eveline offer to come with? Very Unlikely Yes
“Wait up! I’m coming with,” Eveline interjects to my surprise. I smile as she joins me, “Where are we going?”
“The terrace? You’ve only been there for the tournament. The other side of the terrace is actually gardens. It’s beautiful!” I explain.
“Beyond that gate? Are we allowed?” she asks.
I consider for a moment, “Well…I suppose it depends on the gate guard.”
“I can persuade a gate guard,” Eveline laughs.
I shake my head, “Now who is incorrigible?” and we head up the street in fading light.

-Encounter-Event-scream from an alley- Perception 19-
As we pass by the houses on Spindle Way, we hear a scream from behind one of them. “Sounds like a woman,” I stop.
Q: Does Eveline want to intervene? 50/50 No
“No. Let’s keep going,” Eveline pulls my arm.
I shake my head, and close my eyes, slipping into Princeling’s mind, compelling the cat to go take a look. I see a woman being struck by a man holding a broomstick. He staggers and fumes, yelling in anger. She cries out, while the toddler hiding beneath her weeps and both beg “Father” to stop.
I shake off the vision and storm around the side of the house towards the garden in the back. Eveline follows.
-Intimidate 12-
“Get off of her!” I yell at the man as I lay eyes on him.
He wheels towards me, broomstick still in his hand, “Who the hell are you! Get out of here you little bitch!” He starts towards me.
“No!” Eveline urges, trying to pull me back. My eyes flash with anger. The woman still cowers on the ground, curled up with her child beneath her, not wanting to see.

Q: Regular civilian? Very Likely Exceptional Yes
I pull away from her, and grabbing a piece of firewood from nearby pile, try to knock the broomstick from his hand, and cleanly knock it aside. So he takes a swing at me with his meaty fist, and I smack his arm with the chunk of firewood. He cries out in pain. “See how much you like it, you bastard!” I yell at him. He swings his fist again, and I duck back, but miss him with the chunk of firewood.
Q: Is he cogent at all? Unlikely Yes
Then he swings once more, and my ward flares as his fist nearly hits flesh, “What the hell!” drunk stammers in surprise, stepping back.
-Intimidate with advantage! for an 8-
“Yes! Back off! Sober up! And never lay a hand on her again you damned fool!” I warn, letting a flick of flame trickle down the firewood for a moment, not enough to ignite it, but enough that a sober person might back off. This isn’t a sober person. He lunges at me instead, hitting me again and I drop my clumsy impromptu club in the scuffle.
“Leave him! Let’s go!” Eveline urges, but I ignore her as the two of us are soon tangled up on the ground. He is growling and punching at me and I am punching, kicking and biting back. My wig falls to the side in the scuffle and my ward is quickly burned away and he lands a solid blow to my nose. I wince in pain as blood gushes, but he yelps in pain as my knee finds his tender bits and my thumbnail nearly digs into his eye.
“Stop it!” cries the woman who has finally looked up to see what is happening, echoing Eveline’s cry.
And eventually, we do. I somehow end up on top of him, punching the big man repeatedly until…he blacks out. I slump to the ground, exhausted. “Let’s go!” Eveline urges, pulling me to my feet. “Now!” she urges, my wig in one hand, and dragging me along after her.

I am pinching my nose as she pulls me along, “Is it broken?” I ask.
“Serve you right if it is! Told you not to get involved!” she chastise me.
“Fat lot of good you are in a fight,” I reply.
“I don’t scuffle old drunks in an alley, I fight for real,” she retorts.
-Encounter-Circus-looking for caravan guards–that ain’t us- Q: Do they recognize us? Unlikely- Exceptional No
We pass by a man and a woman by the sounds of it, “What happened to her?” I hear the woman ask. The man replies, “Rough part of town.”
Behind Dorak’s, we stop and climbing down into the cellar, Eveline lights the lamp to get a better look at my face, “You idiot! What good did that do?”
“Maybe I felt like hitting someone?” I reply as I feel her rummaging through my satchel.
“You’re lucky he dropped that club! He’d have brained you with it,” she warns.
“If he hadn’t dropped it, I’d have gutted him like a fish,” I reply.
Q: Is she going to stay with me? 50/50 (stealth 13, Defris will spot that) Q: Does Defris investigate? 50/50 No
She shakes her head, “Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! There!” she staunches the bleeding. “Let’s get you upstairs. You get some rest. I’m…I don’t know what to do with you.” We douse the lamp, then try to sneak upstairs.
Once in our room, I change out of my clothes, and with a few words, Eveline has them clean and totally mended as I sit back on the bed. She goes downstairs and returns with a bottle of ale, and pours us each a drink. “Why can’t you just…let things be? You could have been killed, you know?”
“So could she,” I reply.
“He wasn’t trying to kill her. Just…some couples fight like that,” Eveline protests.
“It’s not fighting if she’s cowering protecting an…infant almost,” I retort. “He’s just beating her, like a mule or something. I don’t even beat mules.”
“He was drunk!” Eveline replies.
“So what? That’s no excuse,” I check to make sure I am no longer bleeding.

Q: Does she break down? Likely Exceptional Yes
“I don’t want to lose you,” Eveline suddenly blurts out, pulling me into her arms, sobbing.
-Persuasion 11- Q: Does this amuse her? Very Likely Exceptional No
I wrap my arms around her, stroking her hair and kissing the top of her head, “You never will. But…drink the rest of this ale. I can’t help you tonight.”
“And whose fault is that, really?” she pulls back, glaring at me.
-Performance 13-
“Mine! Lay down,” I instruct her, and…do what I can for her. Soon…she has the needed release to keep her safe from her magic.
-Great Harvest 33rd-
-Sweltering heat, Clear skies, gentle wind-
-Immersion: Smell Fungus-
Ep 16: Scene 19: Great Harvest 33rd
Chaos Factor: 5-Expected Scene
“Ugh! Get that away from me, ” I start, sitting up in bed while Eveline giggles wish fresh pungo in her hands.
“I thought you wanted to work on our remedies today, and I was curious as to whether you can actually smell anything with that nose of yours right now. You didn’t notice lemongrass or mint,” she teases.
“Okay, yeah, but even a dead man can smell pungo! Not fair,” I roll my eyes as I get out of bed and walk over to the mirror, “How bad does it look?”
Q: Do I look alright after makeup? Unlikely No
“Hmmm…let’s just say, you’ve got real character today,” Eveline teases.
“Oh! Ouch. At least it’s not broken,” I check out my nose, my split lip, and my black eye, then accept the head numb tea Eveline offers. “Well…I think…staying inside today. And, could you bring up breakfast? I really don’t want to go downstairs like this,” I wince as I poke at my nose again. “Ouch.”
“Alright, I’ll be back in a minute,” Eveline agrees and I turn my attention to getting dressed.
Q: Does anyone insist on checking on me? Unlikely No
Eveline returns with breakfast and I sit on the bed, eating, and sharing bits with our pets as usual while Eveline starts gathering things to take downstairs. As soon as I am done eating, I begin doing all of the prep work that can be done up in our room away from the kitchen.
Q: Does anything interrupt my solitary work on our remedies? Unlikely No Q: Does everyone else leave the house? Very Likely No
I remain in the room all day. Whenever Eveline comes upstairs, I ask if everyone else has left yet, but apparently, Dorak is constantly puttering around between his room and the cellar.

Around midday, Eveline brings me some bread and cheese for lunch, but by then, all of my work is done, and I am just sitting in bed, working on my journal. “I meant to go look for Lucilla today, and start teaching her.”
“Next week. Right now, I don’t think her mom would let her come with us. You don’t exactly look like you’d be leading her into a safe and financially sound profession,” Eveline laughs.
I sigh and shake my head, “You’re right, you’re right.”
Q: Does anyone come up to check on me after dinner? Likely Exceptional Yes (Generate 2, Mini and Gavin)
After Eveline goes down for dinner, I hear a knock on my door, “Come in?” I ask, confused as to why Eveline would be knocking, but my confusion ends when Mini steps into the room with a tray laden with a bowl of mutton stew, a half loaf, and even a small apple tart.
“Oh, Talia! What happened? I just thought you weren’t feeling well,” Mini exclaims.
-Deception 6-
On hearing her cry out, Gavin taps on the open door and steps in after her. “Oh, yeah, come in! Why doesn’t everyone come in,” I scowl, then grin and chuckle. “Yeah, I…walked into that signpost up on Spindle Way. I really should have been watching where I was going.”
“Looks like you got into a fight! And lost,” Gavin retorts as he comes over to my bedside.
“Well, you should see the other guy,” I shrug.
“A man did this?” Mini gasps.
“Yeah, some drunk asshole on Spindle. He was beating is wife, and didn’t agree with my suggestion he stop,” I shrug.

Q: Does Gavin know the man? Likely Yes
“Up on Spindle? Was it Kavna? About my size, about thirty years old, short red beard?” Gavin asks.
“Yeah, sounds about right,” I shrug.
Q: Does Gavin want to go visit Kavna? Likely Exceptional Yes
“Yeah, he wasn’t at work today. Figured he’d gone on another one of his benders. Maybe I’ll go pay him a visit,” Gavin suggests, turning to leave the room.
-Mini Persuasion 20-
“No! No…Mini! Stop him!” I tell her and she takes off after the stone mason. I hear them talking in the hall, and she manages to calm Gavin down. I hear him return to his room, then Mini returns to mine.
“Alright, I’ve convinced him to leave it be. If he didn’t show up for work, you must have really done a number on him. Tougher than you look?” Mini asks sitting beside me on the bed after I make room for her on taking the stew.
“Mostly, I just keep fighting. Don’t give up if there’s fight left in you,” I shrug.
“Who told you that?” Mini asks, and I hesitate.
-Deception 22-
“Just heard it from some soldiers a long time ago,” I trail off quietly.
“Some of the best advice I’ve ever heard,” Mini replies. Then she notices the chess set on the nightstand. “That’s a chess set, isn’t it?”
I nod, “You play?”

Q: Has Mini ever played chess? Very Unlikely No
“Huh? What? No” Mini shakes her head, blushing at the suggestion.
-Persuasion 11 to get her to play, Persuasion 14 to get her to enjoy it-
“I’ll teach you,” I reply, and reposition so the two of us can both reach the board. And slowly, I manage to teach her the basics and we play a brief game.
After the game, she smiles, “That’s…interesting. Maybe we can play again some time? Defris has a set.”
“Not surprised. Seems the sort,” I chuckle.
“What sort?” Mini asks, quizzically.
“Prone to overthinking?” I suggest and she laughs.
-Discussion topic, previous scene- Q: Does Eveline seem proud? Very Likely No
A bit later, Eveline returns, likely happy to have had the chance to chat with everyone else over dinner. On seeing Mini, Eveline proceeds to tell her about the events of last night, how we heard the scream in the alley and how I ran back to help the woman even as she tried to hold me back. And while Mini seems impressed, Eveline is clearly still annoyed that I put myself in danger for a stranger like that.
-Persuasion 22-
Eventually, Mini excuses herself and Eveline and I get ready for bed. “Thank you for taking such good care of me today, and everything else too.” I smile at her.
Eveline smiles and gives me a kiss, “Don’t expect such treatment in the future if you keep on leaping in front people you can’t just…let have it. Half fighting like that will only get you killed.”
I roll my eyes and shake my head, “Yes, mom”.
Then she pins me to the bed and blows out the lamp.

-Great Harvest 34th-
-hot, clear skies, can sail-
-Immersion: I clench my own fist-
Ep 16: Scene 20: Great Harvest 34th-Altered: Remove Activity
Chaos Factor: 5
Feeling much better, I get out of bed and Eveline and I get dressed. I check myself out in the mirror, and then flex my hands a bit, clenching my fist several times. “Hope I can hold a spear alright today.” Eveline raises an eyebrow, but says nothing. “That skinny girl will like to see me like this. Don’t want to disappoint.”
Then Eveline and I head downstairs.
Q: Are the others there for breakfast? 50/50 No Q: Do I look better? Likely Yes
Aside from Mini in the kitchen the others must be sleeping in. On seeing us, she brings out our plates, “Good morning! Talia, you look much better today.”
“Thank you! I feel better,” I reply.
“You aren’t going to drills, are you?” Mini asks. When I nod, she warns my sister, “Keep an eye on her, Casi. Girl likes her trouble!”
Q: Is Eveline still annoyed? Likely Yes
“For all the good it does,” Eveline rolls her eyes. I look at her askance, and realize, this probably isn’t over.
After breakfast, we take our training spears with us and head up to temple for worship.
-No Encounter-
At the market square, we leave our weapons at the quartermaster then head into the temple, kneeling on the outer ring.

-Roll the virtue for the homily, getting…the 2nd virtue, or I could just build a full blown homily table at some point, I guess-
“Compassion is the second virtue, but one that is dearest to Freia’s heart, for at her core, she is our mother, and a mother loves her children and seeks what is best for them. Help those who suffer, if you are able, by whatever means you can spare,” Mother Miriam explains. “The selfish. Those who do not make even the most modest sacrifices for others in need, are less than beasts. For even wolves of a pack share with their kin.”
Q: Does this homily annoy Eveline? Likely Yes Q: Does Miriam stop us after service? Unlikely No Q: Does Eveline take a jab at me? 50/50 No
I notice Eveline shaking her head as she rolls her eyes. I shake my head and turn my attention back to Miriam’s words.
-Encounter-Warrior bumps me-
After prayers, we rise up and leave the temple, walking back down into the market square, one of the militia women accidentally steps back into me as we are walking past, “Oh, sorry,” she says.
I smile, “No trouble,” and retrieve my gear from the quartermaster before falling in with the rest of the company.
Q: Does Torna say anything? Likely Exceptional Yes
The skinny woman laughs on seeing me, “I wish I’d seen that happen! Looks like I owe someone a drink!”
Q: Does Roslan interrupt? 50/50 Exceptional Yes Intimidate 15
“Shut up, Torna, if you don’t want to look the same!” Roslan retorts, the big woman, as tall as Torna, but weighing nearly twice as much and mostly muscle, pulls herself up to full height. Torna’s face couldn’t actually grow any paler than it naturally is, but she shuts her mouth and glances away. Leaning forward, “Talia? What happened to you?”
“Someone had a bit too much to drink,” I reply as Sergeant Nestor calls us to attention and begins our drills.
Q: Any one on one? Likely Yes Q: Does Torna get to spar me? Very Likely Exceptional Yes
I am squared off against Torna, as Sergeant Nestor seems amused by our rivaly. “If you are disarmed, the fight ends. No daggers!” he warns.
Torna smirks, “Now you’re mine!”
“Good to feel wanted,” I reply with a shrug, then drop into combat stance. We stand face to face. I want to circle, but I know we are supposed to be training to face each other head on, as though in formation, but she slips a bit to the side and grazes my right arm and shoulder, twice! As I pivot to keep her in front of me. In formation, she’d have been struck down by the person on my right, but in one on one…I jab hard as she starts to strike, catching her solid in the right shoulder, and then, as she raise her shield against a follow up feint, jab her hard against the pelvic bone. She drops to one knee.
Q: Has he heard I am a witch? Likely Yes
“Good kill,” Sergeant Nestor remarks, having been watching us more closely than some of the others. “Do it again.”
With a shout, Torna drives at me hard and fast, slipping past my defenses twice in quick succession, and putting me down.
“Up!” Nestor barks, but I am already on my feet, nodding for her to come again. A grazing blow against me, a solid strike against her, a solid blow against me, then two more against her and she is on her back with the tip of my spear at her neck.
Q: Does she take my hand? Unlikely No (Perception 17) (Wisdom check 14-I follow orders fairly well) Q: Any interruptions to drills? Unlikely No
I switch my spear to my shield hand and offer a hand back up. She bats my hand away and stands on her own as we are ordered back into formation. I notice Sergeant Nestor’s eyes on me, studying me. Curious. But he calls us into formation fighting, having us drill five vs five and using our shields to protect each other. By the end of it, we are all sore and sweaty.
Q: Do they both want to go? Likely Yes -Event: Wagon splashes us- Q: Does Roslan shake her fist at it? 50/50 No
“Bathhouse?” I suggest to Roslan and Eveline, and soon we are on our way towards the White District bathhouse. Along the way, a passing cart, splashes us with…not water…as it rolls by. “Well, at least we were already planning on a bath.” I observe.
“Just a bit of filth, nothing new in this town,” Roslan shrugs it off.
-Immersion-Anger-(1-3 Eveline, 4-6 Me)
Ep 16: Scene 21: The Bathhouse (34th)-Altered Remove a character
Chaos Factor: 5
Leaving our outergarments and possessions at the door, the three of us find an empty basin to share. “I supposes herbalism must pay pretty well if you do this every week?” Roslan grins, accepting a cup of wine from the carafe Eveline called over.
Eveline then notices someone from across the bath hall, “Oh, that’s Fraunces.! I’ll catch up later,” she says taking the carafe with her, my cup still empty.
I frown, very annoyed, “Well…that was rude.”
“Share mine,” Roslan suggests and pours half of her cup into mine. I thank her, and we lay back in the warm water to relax our sore muscles.
-Topic-Campaign-
“Hey, thank you for my dad, and Pelop too. You’ve really helped us out,” Roslan observes.
“He seemed a good kid, and I figured you could use the help,” I shrug.
Q: Does Roslan wish to marry now? 50/50 No
“Yeah, the extra hand makes all the difference tin the world,” she agrees.
“So, now that your father has another set of hands to help out, what about you? Any plans to move on?” I ask raising an eyebrow.
Q: Any plans to move on? Very Unlikely No
“Where would I even go? This is my home, and just because my dad has a son now doesn’t mean he doesn’t still need me. Besides, the boy has a few more years until he can do a full day’s worth of real work,” Roslan laughs.
“Glad to hear it. I might miss you if yo moved away,” I grin.
“Already? You’ve been here, what? Three weeks?” Roslan asks.
I nod, “So it seems, so it seems.”
Q: Does anyone else join us? Unlikely Yes Q: Vanessa? 50/50 No (generate two people) Q: Does she wince? Likely Yes
A pale woman about twice my age, and her companion, only a decade older, approach, “May we join you?” the older woman asks before noticing my face.
“By all means,” I gesture for them to join us. “I’m Talia Evenbough. This is my friend, Roslan.”
“Lydia,” the younger women beams as she slips down into the water. The older one, more reserved, tells us her name is Allison. “So what happened to you?” Lydia asks without a moment’s hesitation.
“Yeah, what did happen? You haven’t told me yet,” Roslan urges.
-Deception 9- (fool Lydia, but not the other two)
“Oh, a couple of nights ago, Casia and I were in the low district and a man tried to rob us,” I shrug, “I guess the levy training paid off?”
Q: Does Allison assume the worst? Likely Yes
“You were in the low district? At night? Are you sure it wasn’t a stonemason’s jealous wife?” Allison sneers.
Q: Does Roslan intercede? Likely Yes
“Hey! That’s a nasty thing to say, you pasty ghoul!” Roslan interjects, shocking both Allison and Lydia.
-Persuasion 9-
“No! It’s alright, Roz. They don’t know me,” I interrupt.
“No! You take that back you old hag!” Roslan continues.
“What are you even doing here?” Allison sneers, “What are you? A farm hand? Sun bake your brains like it did your arms.”
-Lydia persuasion 3-
“Hey! Did I tell you the one about farmer’s wooden shoe?” Lydia offers, hopefully, her attempted joke falling on deaf ears.
-Intimidation 3-
“Behave yourselves!” I demand.
“Have these women removed!” Allison demands and a couple of the bathhouse attendants arrive to escort Roslan and I from the premises.
I look back at a sheepish Lydia, and under Allison’s icy gaze, I say, “I’d like to her it.”
“You’d like to hear it, wouldn’t you!” she grins, and I can’t help but laugh at her wordplay.
“Good one!” I admit as I follow Roslan out of the bath hall to collect our things.
–
Outside, Roslan sighs, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let them get under my skin.”
“Eh, that’s alright,” I shrug, “Saved me buying another carafe.” Then noticing the tavern, “Been to the Princely Prankster?”
Q: Does Roslan need to go home? Likely Exceptional Yes
“I appreciate the offer, but I really need to get back home. If I stay out late drinking on Godsday, Marketday morning is murder!” she laments.
I laugh, “Yeah, cows don’t milk themselves do they?”
Q: Does she have a cow? 50/50
“Goats. We have a pair of goats,” Roslan grins. “Maybe we’ll get a cow some day though.”
-Encounter-Wanderers-Caravan master (generate one)-Reaction 12-neutral
We then follow the street back down towards the low gate, and reach it as a caravan of heavy wagons rolls into the city laden with sacks of grain. “Clear the way!” the well dressed man beside the drover calls down to us as Roslan and I step aside. “What happened to you, girl?” the merchant exclaims.
“See! This is why I stayed home all day yesterday,” I say to nobody in particular as Roslan wasn’t aware of it.
“Mugger,” Roslan shrugs, “But you should see him! Talia here’s a real scrapper!”
“Is that so?” the merchant looks me up and down, “You wouldn’t think it.”
“Have I nice evening,” I call to him as I continue walking to the gate. Then “Goodnight Roslan. See you next week, unless I run into you in the fields or something.”
“Go sleep it off. You’ll be better in no time. And maybe…maybe you’ll tell me what really happened,” Roslan smirks. And I laugh in reply.
Q: Is Haggi there? 50/50 Yes Q: Does she ask? Likely Yes
Reaching the Quarry Gate, I pass a tenpiece to Haggi. “What happened to you?” she asks without visible concern.
“Wife beater. I got in his way, and gave worse than I got,” I reply dourly.
Q: Does this please her? Likely Yes
“Good. You’re a good woman. Don’t listen to your sister. You do the right thing, even if it doesn’t seem like it matters. It does,” she says in her normal, emotionless way.
“Thank you for that. Goodnight, Haggi,” I smile as I continue on my way.
“Goodnight, Talia,” she replies.
Q: Does Evelyn stay out late with Flaurence? Likely Yes
Soon, I am home in bed after a quick meal, and after a bit of reading by lamplight, snuff the wick and drift off to sleep.
-35th Great Harvest-Low Challenge-
-Warm, Clear Skies, inconsequential winds-
-Smell-Fungus-
Q: Did Eveline come home last night? Likely Yes
Ep 16: Scene 22: Great Harvest 35th-Low Challenge-interrupt-remove object and activity
Chaos Factor: 5
At some point in the night, I became aware that Eveline had returned home and lay down next to me. I wake up, and dress, letting her sleep…and once again get that earthy smell from outside. Looking out the window, that fungal growth has returned. I sigh, and shake my head, gently kiss my sleeping companion on her forehead, then start carrying things downstairs to load onto the cart after breakfast.
Q: Are boarders downstairs having breakfast? 50/50 Yes (d4, just 1)
Downstairs, Dorak and Gavin are sitting at breakfast with Mini when I enter. “Looking better,” Mini smiles on seeing me.
“Barely noticeable, really,” Gavin adds. Dorak nods agreement as I join them for a bite to eat.
“It’s Low Challenge, isn’t it? Think the market will be busy today?” I ask.
Dorak shrugs, “Hard to say. Last year, we were still celebrating the lord’s wedding. This year, Baroness’ celebration was just last week. Not sure how many people who might want to take the challenge aren’t still nursing bruised egos and injuries.”
I laugh, “Well, the ones who got beat up wouldn’t have won anyway.”
“I know some blokes who are going try for the purse,” Gavin grins. “You know, a lot of boys think that if they are good at drills, they might can topple the sellswords that show up for challenge. I’ll probably go watch the first couple of rounds to cheer on my mates. Wanna come?”
“And miss the market? No thanks,” I laugh, “But you have fun. Maybe Casia will go with…if she doesn’t join me. Or Mini?” I raise an eyebrow towards her.
“Yeah, we’re both going!” Dorak interjects. “As soon as she and I clean up the kitchen.”
“Well, bet on a winner for me!” I grin, and slide over a score of silver coins.
“I’ll be happy to!” he laughs, counting and pocketing the coins. “No promises though.” I shrug, as it is understood.
Then I get up, retrieve the cart from the cellar, and load it up in the street.
Q: Does Eveline join me? Likely Yes
“Why didn’t you wake me?” Eveline yawns as she is dressing as I finish gathering things for the cart.
“I figured you needed the sleep after…Flaunders, was it?” I raise an eyebrow.
Q: Is she upset? Unlikely No
“Yeah, she kind of wore me out,” she giggles, “Anyway, let’s get going.” I nod and the two of us head downstairs.
-Encounter-Child recognizes me–mistakenly-
As we are heading up to the market square, a group of children pause their games, “The pie maid! The pie maid!” and soon crowd around us.
“No pies today!” Eveline cries out. I look at her in confusion, “Mini and I used the cart the other day too…for pies.” The children sulk off, disappointed. I shake my head and keep going.

Ep 16: Scene 23: Market Square (35th)-interupt, increase activity, remove object
Chaos Factor: 5
Arriving at the market square, we see Sergeant Halpern again with that unusual falcon shaped birthmark on his neck. He is, once again, collecting entry fees from vendors. The market is absolutely bustling with activity already as vendors are struggling to find empty spots. “I’m taking that one over there,” I point out, “and I already paid you for this week and next, last week!” I shake my head, pushing my cart into the square.
Q: Does he try to stop me? Unlikely No
He scoffs, shaking his head, but lets us move on in, realizing we recognized last week’s extortion. Soon, we are set up alongside other vendors, and hawking our wares as locals pass through. We occasionally hear shouts and cheers from the terrace above, and the fanfare of trumpets as people enjoy the games. Occasionally, eager young competitors come down from above to examine the wares, and a lot of food is sold to travelers attending the games.
-Generate vendors and sales- (Generate the book seller)
The market is very crowded, and though we do a brisk business, we don’t make nearly as much money as we did to days ago. We do sell some bonemend, and even a full blown healer’s kit. Not surprising given what’s happening on the terrace! But when I pause to walk around and buy something to eat from one of the farmers, I spot a stranger selling scrolls and letters from his covered wagon. “What’s this?” I ask entering his portable shop.
“Enter, please enter,” the grey haired scholar invites. “Please, lessons abound for the learned mind!”
I laugh, and begin glancing at the notes on the end of each scroll, indicating the contents, and then my eyes are drawn to the books, “May I?” I ask, reaching for a title.
“But of course. Are you well read?” he asks.
“I can read,” I shrug, opening up a book about armor making…intrigued by the illustrations, but quickly closing it as there is no practical use for such a tome to me.
“Ah, and were you taught in the temples?” he asks.
-Deception 12 vs insight 14-
“Who else but priests teach one to read?” I laugh, picking up another book, whose words bring comfort to my soul, though I cannot read them. “What’s this?”
“Poems in the language of the goddess,” the man replies.
“I cannot read it, but the symbols…they comfort me,” I reply.
He nods, “The tongue of celestia brings comfort to those of pure heart.”
I laugh as I put the book back on the shelf, “Then it ought to scorch mine!” The next book is about plants, written in Kardashev tongue. Another book is about various places in Ravenholme, a kingdom across the sea. There are letters, and someone’s diary. And a book of pressed flowers, whose leather binding is inlaid with silver and gold. “I don’t know this tongue either.”
“Narosian. The sorcerer kings from the far south,” he explains.
“Sorcerers? Witches you mean?” I ask.
“No, there are many different traditions of magic, if you listen to the scholars from Kardashev. There are those who learn through books! Who the Kardashev call wizards. There are those who learn through whispered pacts with ancient evils, who they call warlocks. And then there are those from whom magic simply flows…and they are called sorcerers. And those people become kings and queens in the land of Narossia,” he explains.
Q: Have I heard this before? Very Unlikely Exceptional No
I look at him in shock, “How is that not more widely known?”
-His insight 16-
“It is…to wizards…in Kardashev. And in elven lands as well. Do you…practice the elven magic?” he asks.
Glancing to ensure none are at the door to the wagon, I confess, “I am but a student. How much for this book?”
“Twelve crowns,” he suggests.
-Persuasion 20-
I bite my bottom lip, “It is a beautiful book, but of no practical value, perhaps six crowns?”
The old man laughs, “Is beauty not of great practical value? But for a fellow student, I will let you have it for six crowns. My name is Kartus.”
-Deception 13, vs insight 8-
“Talia Evenbough,” I reply before counting out my coins and accepting the book, “Thank you so much! I hope…” looking around with a smile, “that I might one day have a collection such as this.”
“Works of beauty, every one,” he agrees with a satisfied nod.
Grateful and satisfied, I step back out of his wagon, proudly adding my purchase to my satchel as I return to our own booth.
-Marketplace event-Measures inspections-Persuasion 14-
Returning to our booth, I see Borin talking to Eveline with rather dour expression on his face. She gives me a desperate look, and I greet him with a smile, “Watchman Borin! Good to see you again. Might I interest you in some mosquito balm? The scent of lemongrass keeps them away which has been very useful to me lately.”
He smiles at me, “Talia, I had wondered where you were. No, I am not looking to buy anything right now, just checking your measures.”
-Persuasion 20-
“I understand,” I nod, “But to do that, perhaps you should come to Dorak’s tonight while the alehouse is open, and we can show you our scales and tools.”
“Well…I suppose I might could do that. Quarry district, yes?” he asks.
“Tanner and Chisel,” I offer. “Hope to see you there.”
Q: Does he leave now? Likely Exceptional No -topic skills-
He then begins looking through our merchandise again, lingering, “How did you learn to make all of these remedies?”
“Our mother taught us. She was an herbalist and midwife,” I explain, “back in Plowstump and then on the road.”
“You’ve travelled a great deal?” Borin raises an eyebrow.
“Hammerfell, Oldenfall, Truestone, Faithstone, Farhold, Westhold, and now…here,” I shrug.
Q: Has he ever left Oldenstone? Unlikely No
He blinks in surprise, “I’ve never been outside of the barony.”
-Persuasion 18-
“That must mean you have a great number of friends here? I’ve seen many places, but have kept very few friends because of it,” I shrug.
“It must be a lonely life,” he observes.
-Persuasion 11 vs Eveline-Persuasion 23 vs Borin-
“Not with my sister along,” I grin at Eveline. She smiles at me, but continues serving other patrons while I entertain our nosy watchman, “Oh, have you been to the peddlar’s booth yet? I’m not sure about some of those combs he’s selling.” Borin’s eyes perk up, and he makes a beeline to the peddlar’s booth.
“Why did you do that to the poor man?” Evelines raises an eyebrow.
“Because I really don’t want him in front of our booth all day,” I laugh.
“So you invite him back to Dorak’s?” she asks in confusion.
Q: Does this amuse her? Very Likely Yes
“Yes, because if the little bit cleavage you show troubles him, imagine how long he’ll stay when he gets an eyeful of Mini?” I grin and Eveline bursts into laughter.
-Encounter-Drunk, belligerent peasant-
After the market closes, we pack up and begin our slow walk downhill back to Dorak’s alehouse, but as we are going down Spindle Way, that red haired man from the other day spots us, drunk again, and slurring his words. “You! It was you, wasn’t it!” He fumes storming towards me. .
-Intimidate 17-
I step forward, fire in my eyes and command him, “Kavna! Calm down! Go back inside! Or I’ll put you to shame again!”
He stops in his tracks, then a comment of clarity crossing his face, turns away, mumbling, and returns to his home.

Ep 16: Scene 24: Dorak’s Alehouse (35th)-Altered scene-remove an activity
Chaos Factor: 5
As we are just about to enter the alehouse, I stop Eveline on the doorstep, taken by her beauty bathed in Fortune’s fading light, “Hey, I got you something. ” I pull the Narissian flower book from my satchel.
She turns away and steps through the door into the alehouse. Crestfallen, I put the book back in my satchel, and begin unloading the cart while Eveline races upstairs to change into her alewife outfit.
I unload the cart while Eveline eagerly helps Dorak and Mini get ready for the evening, then I put the cart back in the cellar, scoop out a bowl of stew, pour a pint of ale, and retire to my room for the night. “Tell me if Borin comes by,” I tell Eveline
Q: Does she acknowledge my request? 50/50 Yes
“Yeah, I’ll bring him up if he comes by,” she agrees.
In our room, I carefully set down the book I bought on our workbench. Then I sit in bed, slowly eating dinner as I hear the sounds downstairs steadily increasing in volume. “So, Princeling? You find true love in this great city yet?” Then looking to Warren, I laugh, “I know you haven’t. You don’t come and go as freely in and out the window at night. Poor dog,” I scratch behind his ears.
Q: Does Borin come by? 50/50 Yes
Eventually, there is a knock on the door, and Eveline sticks her head in, “Visitor!” and let’s a red faced Borin into our room.
He looks around, possibly shocked by the number of roots and plants hanging from the drying racks across our cieling. “Never been an herbalist’s workshop before?” I ask.
“No, not really. There’s the one in the white district, but I’ve never had any cause to,” he admits.
-Persuasion 6-
“Alright, well, here is our measuring scale, the larger mortar and pestle. Scoops of various sizes, and of course, a basic recipe book to guide a novice in our trade, though…Casia and I know how to make more effective or specialized blends as needed,” I explain showing the tools of our trade.
He scowls, “But how do you know they will work if you don’t follow the instructions?”
“Experience. If the remedy doesn’t work, people don’t come back the next time they are ill,” I shrug.
“Or…you have to move to another place because nobody trusts you. Is that why you move around so much?” he asks.
-Intimidation 18 vs insight 20-
“You’re here to check that our weights and measures are as they should be,” I scowl, no longer interested in banter with this boor of a man.
He quickly realizes that he crossed a line, and starts checking the measures instead.
As soon as he has checked the last one, I ask, “Is everything in good order, watchman?”
Q: Does he admit our tools are accurate? Nearly Certain Yes Q: Does he apologize? 50/50 No Q: Does he leave? Likely Exceptional Yes
“Yes, everything seems to be in good order,” he admits, then turning to leave, he adds, “Have a nice evening.”
I nod, “And you as well, watchman Borin.” Then I close the door behind him, and relax as I add to my journal and study my spellbook.
Q: Do any of the boarders come calling? Very Unlikely No
Eventually, I snuff the lamp, and go to sleep.

Ep 16: Scene 25: Threshing 1st
Chaos Factor: 5
I wake up with Warren in bed at my side, and Princeling on my chest. Sitting up, I see a note on the desk. I pick it up, and recognize Eveline’s writing. “I didn’t want to wake you, but went out with Mini so as not to trouble you.”
I carefully fold the letter, fighting back the tears in my eyes, and put it inside my journal. I then pat the book of pressed flowers that the letter was left lying on, dress, and head downstairs.
Q: Is Eveline downstairs? 50/50 Exceptional Yes Q: Other boarders? Likely Yes (2 of the renters)
Eveline and Mini are laughing together while Dorak, Gavin and Ivor sit at the table eating breakfast. I walk over to the kitchen, and grab my sack of food for the day, then breakfast, “I’m heading out. Taking the animals with me,” I state tersely then walk out the door.
Q: Does Eveline follow? 50/50 Yes Q: Is she mad? 50/50 No
Eveline races out the door after me, “Hey! What’s wrong?”
-Persuasion 20- Q: Does she apologize? Very Likely Yes
“Why didn’t you wake me? We haven’t…I wanted to be with you last night. I had a gift for you. And…forget it,” I throw my hands up and turn away.
Q: Does she admit her fears? 50/50
“Hey, I’m sorry,” Eveline explains, “I didn’t realize it. I’ve been…unfair to you. I just…I’m afraid of losing you.”
“Then don’t drive me away,” I lay it out. Then I turn, and head towards the quarry gate, “Oh, pay the rent! You know where the money is.” I tell her as I continue on my way.
Q: Does she chase after? Unlikely No -Encounter-special- (My perception 21-theirs 9) Q: Is Erana with them? Unlikely No
Heading towards the quarry gate, I see Mical, Sir Dallian, and four of my father’s men heading straight towards me. I immediately kneel down to fix my boot, whisper my spell, and adjust my features so I look twenty years old, hair starting to grey, nose, cheekbones, jawline all altered, then I stand back up and continue past them.
-Their perception roll to realize I am walking past them should be at least DC 20, they roll a 14- (Gate team, perception 17)-
I continue past them, look back and see that they are entering Dorak’s place. So I leave though the town gate, walking past two more of my father’s men who have been posted there, then leave along the north from the village, and keep walking.
-Encounter-Rabid animal-(My perceptions fail, my companions don’t!)
Walking north, I soon leave the island the village is on, crossing the bridge into the hill country, distracted, lost in thought when I hear Princeline hiss and notice Warren has gone on alert. A dog is on the road ahead, glaring at us, growling, foam from his mouth. I quickly look around me to ensure nobody is nearby, then, “Magnuousa!” I say, stretching out my hand and unleashing a jet of flame that quickly incinerates the poor animal. I hurl it’s smoldering body off the trail, so it is out of view of passers by, then continue on my way, slowly letting fire dance between my fingers and the wig I will no longer use until it is no more either.

Then, my nerves finally beginning to steady, I start looking for some bleaching plants, as I need to change who I am once more. It doesn’t take long before I have a good amount of chamomile and lemongrass in my satchel, which will help once I have a chance to rest a bit. Before I enter the town, my shorn hair becomes a strawberry blonde but my features remain natural.
Q: Do the guards stop me? Very Unlikely No
I am soon walking through the fair sized mining village, and I spot both a tavern, and an herbalists shop. I go to the latter first, “Good day, master,” I say as I enter.
“Good day, friend, a traveler I see? How may I help you,” he asks.
I tug at my hair, “I wish to lighten this, have you honey and vinegar?” I ask.
“Of course,” he replies, and a few silver coins are exchanged as I add them to my pack.
“Thank you friend,” I bid him farewell, and then cross the road to the tavern for a meal.

Ep 16: Scene 26: The Tapped Vein (1st)
Chaos Factor: 5
I enter the tavern, whose sign is a broken pick axe and rusted shovel, and sit down, signaling the tavern wench that I’d like a meal and tankard. She soon brings over a bowl of stewed chicken with onions, parsnip, cabbage and potato, plus a tankard of weak ale. I nod and begin to eat, staring up at the round shield over the bar. It is one of Pond’s livery, and has seen a lot of battle before being hung up there.
The barkeep is…an old woman! She moves very well given her age, far older than my aunt Maeve, but lively as she talks to some of the miners who have come in for a drink and a meal midshift. I eat in silence, hoping to quickly and unforgettably, leave.
Q: Does anyone approach me? 50/50 No -encounter-songbirds-
Quickly taking my fill, I leave my coins on the table, and am soon back on the road, continuing my trek north. Once more in farm country, a number of songbirds take flight time and again as we pass down the road. Princeling and Warren both eagerly give chase.
About an hour outside of Deeprock, I pause at a stream to treat my hair, quickly washing out the black hairdye, and taking my natural red hair several shades lighter. It is harder to do my eyebrows, and getting a good look at my reflection is only possible by holding Princeling in front of me and looking through his eyes instead of my own. But once satisfied, I continue north, arriving outside the village of Longtrek near dusk.
